Do you STILL trust Microsoft to build antivirus support into Windows 8? | |

One antivirus package installed on every Windows 8 system will mean that millions of people could be vulnerable to a dodgy update. As much as I like the idea of having an antivirus package installed on Windows by default, the thought of the widespread damage to millions of PCs that a single bad update could cause also worries me greatly. | ||

| Why are we talking about this? Microsoft is NOT going to bundle antivirus into windows 8.... no way in hell they're gonna deliberately put themselves into court AGAIN facing antitrust violations. Not gonna happen. Not unless it's opt-out during setup, and fully uninstallable...... And even then, lord knows if they did that in the US, the EU would require them to "advertise" all the AV alternatives on their own software... |

#1 -- It's actually true, Windows Defender in Windows 8 includes antivirus capability. Visually it looks just like Security Essentials, just rebranded.

If you guys haven't tried it yet, MS's Security Scanner is pretty damned good.
http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx It has successfully removed more malware rogue's for me than either Malwarebytes or SuperAntiSpyware lately. It even deals with that really bad one that hides all the files, and issues bogus hard drive error reports. It even fixes the file-hide issue automatically, which is a major time saver. Average scan time is 1 hour to 1 hour 15 min. |

Ran it last night at home and I'm clean as a whistle! Probably a product or running Norton and Security Essentials concurrently. |
