Sun puts $76 price tag on Office rival | |

Sun Microsystems' StarOffice 6.0 will go on sale May 21 with a price of $75.95, the company will announce Wednesday, in a more concerted effort by the server specialist to take on Microsoft's overwhelmingly dominant Office. StarOffice 5.2 has been available as a free download since Sun acquired the StarOffice product line in 1999, but Sun said earlier this year it would charge for the new version and provide better support for customers using it. It may not be free, but it's still less expensive than Microsoft Office, which overwhelmingly dominates the office software market with a 95 percent share, according to Gartner Dataquest. The basic version of Office has a retail cost of $479, with an upgrade cost of $239 and an educational version for $149. | ||

Please list the 90% of the features of Office that 90% of office users never use. How about just the topn ten? One of the things that makes Office so powerful is it's wealth of features which allows it to cater to a wide range of users. Just because you don't use a particular feature don't be stupid enough to think the feature is not absolutely critical to someone else. This argument is old and easily refuted. I have never understood why anybody is gullible enough to think it's worth repeating. |

BTW, I was a long time AmiPro user and when WordPro first came out it looked promising. It was far easier to use than Word because it's interface was consistent. But it was also buggy as hell and in the three years it took Lotus to stabilize that they lost their small marketshare.

Hey at least they have some more compatition now.. maybe by the next version of ms office we'll actually see prices not increase this time around.. as it has with every release of office in recent memory. I's suggest a drop in price..hahah but then I'd be just dreaming.
Seriously folks almost 600$ for an office suite? Why is it that high?.. cause it can be. Seriously playing more then 500$ per user for office is getting very expensive and even more so now with the new vla 6. |
