Microsoft's Answer to Vicious Malware? Reinstall Windows | |

Microsoft has discovered a new variant on a bootkit so malicious that Microsoft's original recommended solution was to reinstall Windows from a recovery CD. In a recent blog post on TechNet, Chun Feng, an engineer with the Microsoft Malware Protection Center, warned that users will have to roll back Windows via a recovery CD if they are infected with what it refers to as Popureb.E, which now inludes a driver component that triggers at boot time. | ||

The article does not say to reinstall Windows. The boot sector rootkit can be cleaned out and instructions on how to do so are in the article. Rolling back Windows to a previous state using a Windows DVD, after cleaning the MBR and packed virus files is not the same as a reinstall. I clean these damn things out all the time, from my customer's computers, using the method described here after manually deleting the obvious virus files that hide in the users AppData folders, using a Linux Live CD.
If one is paranoid, or has lots of time on their hands, or the backup registries were trashed, then by all means reinstall. It's just not as much fun. This post was edited by bobsireno on Thursday, June 30, 2011 at 13:25. |

#1 - Clonezilla (http://clonezilla.org/) works VERY well. Spend your time and do a fresh install. Then create separate images too (base install, office installed, av installed, etc). Then if you ever need to go back to an image, within 15 minutes, your back to the image state. Works well with USB and eSATA drives as well, so you can store your images there along with files backup.

#1: Yeah, he said restore to a known good config, which a lot of people misunderstood to mean wipe & reinstall.
#2: While I agree that a yearly wipe is good for the soul, it's a tremendous hassle reinstalling all apps and restoring all data. I don't know about you guys, but for me it takes about 2-3 days to get back to normal. #3: I've tried Clonezilla but it always seems to have an issue when I use it and I end up back with Acronis. |

Hey All, I use Acronis to create a hard drive image almost every week, depending on what changes (updates) I make to the system. As others have mentioned, I once reinstalled all the software on my system and it took up to four days.
It takes 10 minutes to create a new image and 10 minutes to restore an image. This approach has saved me countless hours of reinstalls. I always keep the last image, for a total of two images on a second backup hard drive just in case something goes wrong. Acronis has never failed to restore my system back to the point the hard drive image was created. Just some thoughts. This post was edited by Hanspuppa on Thursday, June 30, 2011 at 08:53. |

It's not worth the time to repair, especially when in a corporate environment where security is of the utmost importance.
I can re-image a machine in 18 minutes + the data backup time. It's just not worth the attempt any more. |

| #8: A copy of disk imaging software and an external hard disk will do as good if not a better job, and for a fraction of the price of a dedicated home server. This is true as long as you don't need any fancy features like snapshots. |
