Microsoft may have laid out its plans to have Windows running on any device while unveiling the next version of Windows at CES earlier this month, but it's not there yet. In the meantime, we're still stuck with the current version of Windows, which, for better or for worse, cannot fit into the types of devices its successor promises to fit. | ||

I've seen this page out of the MS playbook before. This is where they try to dissuade you from buying a unit that does what you want today by promising you the Sun and Moon if you wait for the MS solution which is coming Real Soon Now(tm). Of course, if you fall for it, the MS solution will show up late and be missing half the over-hyped features.
I also notice MS has stopped using 'innovate' in every public utterance from their PR dept, but it seems to have been substituted by 'rich'. 'Rich' video-conferencing, 'rich' file system, 'rich' applications... what does that even mean? Or is it just a superfluous buzzword meant to distinguish between what are essentially the same offerings from Apple? |

I've been coming to this site for over a decade and honestly, I can't say I've ever agreed with most of what you write about Microsoft or its products. I've worked as a PM for Microsoft for a long time. That on the table, I look at things very objectively and am very blunt and open about where we are weak and failing. (Pre-Ballmer era Microsoft thought process.) In this case, I agree entirely with what you wrote. There's a lot of truth in what Microsoft writes about iPad and its enterprise capability but frankly, who cares? The device is not and was not intended for that market, even if it is making headway there, period. Microsoft has yet to grasp that when someone picks up an iPad or a Droid X, they don't ask things like: "Can this device be updated centrally using a WSUS infrastructure?", "Does it still support the CDO DLL for Exchange or do I have to rely on web services to route my free/busy information?", "Does the kernel support spin-lock dispatching of child partition threads or only those in the parent?". Good heavens. In this case, Microsoft has long missed the boat on the tablet wave, even though we're essentially the "father" of the technology. The "Real Soon Now" trademark is sadly and simply, too true. In this market and in mobile. This whole line of "rich" this and "innovative" that is pathetic. Ballmer needs to go, plain and simple. The execution in these markets that Microsoft cannot afford to be left behind in has been atrocious at best. He more than anyone else has caused Microsoft to become what it has in many areas: a lumbering, clueless, irrelevant giant. I certainly don't believe this to be the case with many of our products and the markets within which they participate but tablet computing and mobile are abominations. | #2: Well, thanks for the support but I don't see how you can call yourself objective and disagree with everything MS-related I say. My biggest beef with MS is their ethical issues, and a blatant rage-inspiring hypocrisy. You think it was good of MS to game ISO and ram OOXML through by stuffing committees with ringers so that they could have an ISO standard that only MS could implement? You think it's awesome how MS can blatantly steal technology from potential partners and then cry about their own precious IP the very next day? You think MS using 'marketing resources' in the form of dollars to derail a Linux win in Nigeria is just business? Have you read the Halloween documents? IE is a steaming pile of crap that MS constantly defends as having better and better security, yet every month there is a new drive-by own-your-box security hole. I've been following Microsoft since the 80's and I've never seen a more predatory company that will use any means necessary to get it's way. MS has done a lot of good for computing over the past 30 years, but they have done a lot of harm along the way that continues to this very day. |
