LOL... great article.

So Microsoft has failed miserably becase...

They have the best selling CONSUMER gaming system on the market and just launched Kinect, which is the fastest selling CONSUMER gadget in HISTORY.

They totally control the desktop OS market - including the CONSUMER market - and launched Windows 7 with rave reviews? Not only that, but a huge percentage of businesses plan to move to Windows 7 after skipping Vista?

The Netbook market is TOTALLY dominated by Windows - epecially Windows 7 - and the only threat there is the iPad?

They recently launched Windows 7 Phone, again to rave reviews, and have sold over 1.5 million devices in 2 months.

Ya... total fail.

Is it April 1st?

I got a better headline, "Apple iPad Steals Sales from iMac, BigMac, whatever." In other words, if you can get iPad starting at $499, why would you spend on a notebook that starts at $1199?

My bet more and more people have been and will ask the above question of themselves. Uh, oh, Apple . . .

More Apple Huggers Anonymous stuff.

#1 "They have the best selling CONSUMER gaming system on the market"
I'm fairly sure they don't... http://vgchartz.com/
Kinect will help with the sales (aside from being a very cool piece of hardware) - but they're unlikely to overtake the Wii.

"but they're unlikely to overtake the Wii. "

That may be true, but no one uses the Wii. My kids got one 3 years ago and haven't touched it in 2 years. We now use it for Netfilx access on a spare TV.

Still, sales are sales, but i don't see how the Wii can possibly maintain that lead especially with the Kinect nipping at it's heels. Moreover, the Wii is an inferior console to both Playstation and the latest XBOX 360 (the original was a POS).

#1: They recently launched Windows 7 Phone, again to rave reviews, and have sold over 1.5 million devices in 2 months.

Really? The reviews I've read said it was too little, too late, under-powered and under-featured as compared to iPhone and Android, and the 1.5m units were shipped to the channel. I"ve yet to see anyone around here with one.

#5: Not only that, but after the RRoD fiasco and the billion-dollar writedown they took because of it, the XBox won't be profitable for MS for at least 300 years.

#6 As a parent I appreciate the choice of games on the Wii versus the other consoles.

#8: Same here. I got my kids a Wii this Xmas and I;m amazed at the sweat they work up playing some of these games. I like seeing my son out of breath from winning the cycling race.

#8, #9: Give it a couple of months. If they have another choice, the Wii will be the last thing they use.

#11 By 15406 (209.87.228.158) at 1/4/2011 1:56:52 PM
#10: My kids are both under 10, so I'm betting I'll get at least 3-4 years out of it. At their age, they already bounce between things. They'll play Wii for awhile, then on to their PSP and DS respectively, then on to the computers, then on to the TV, then onto the PS2, then on to the N64, then back to the Wii. Rinse, repeat.

FTA: "Analysts believe that millions of consumers and businesses would discard Microsoft’s windows operating system in favor of new Google Chrome OS running on notebooks and netbooks."

Is that so? I wonder how many businesses were surveyed about switching to an as yet unreleased OS that, out of the box in it's initial incarnation, won't run any of their existing programs or print to their printers.

Latch,

Completely off topic.

If you get a chance, do take a look at the Kinect. I was doubtful at first but this is an amazing device. The difference between the WiiMote and Kinect is the difference between a bicycle and a Benz.

I see the Kincet as disruptive technology. I can think of dozens of new uses for the device when connected to a PC (via USB drivers).

This device will become huge and spawn as many competitors as the iPad.

@oldog

Did you really expected a different comment from Latch?

#13: I've seen some video and, yes, it looks very interesting. I'm glad that the comm protocol was reversed so it could be adapted to any number of innovative uses beyond the console. I'm also glad that , for once, MS didn't do the stupid thing and try to clamp down on those trying to extend the Kinect.

#14: Thanks for playing! As parting gifts, please accept this bamboo steamer and the World's Smallest Juicer!

According to Balmer's CES keynote last night: "The Xbox 360 was the number one selling console in the US for every one of the final six months of 2010."

In other words, it's doing pretty damn well.

#16: LOL, talk about cherry-picking facts. "...every one of the final six months of 2010"?? It's amazing what stats can say when you control every framing aspect. What about the first six, Ballmer?

Me: "Hey Ballmer, how many of those 6 lawsuits did MS win?"
Ballmer: "All three of them."

#19 By 228224 (74.59.85.152) at 1/8/2011 3:15:42 PM
#18: The last 6 months of the year are the most crucial in any electronics industry. More people shop in the last couple of months than the rest of year than probably the rest of the year. [Nowe whether Balmer's statistics were true, that's a different story.]

I'm sure Apple cares more about the last two months of the year. So does Samsung with screens.

Nice being anti-Microsoft, eh?

Oh what does all these comments got to do with Windows? [as the article is based on]

The author is an idiot and biased. Windows 7 sold 240 million copies [that's how many millions more than OS X?]. Anyone who says Chome OS will make a dent is seriously out of there. Google "says" that Chrome OS was made to be put on netbooks.

Chrome OS is nothing but another Linux distro. When netbooks came out in [late] 2008, they were released in Linux and Windows versions. Windows easily outsold Linux and at one point about 80% of netbooks were returned because the CONSUMER [not us computer fans/geeks/....] disliked Linux. Two years [or so] later. You think anything has changed? Linux OS marketshare is still estimated at 1.1% and a chunk of that are from server installations - not consumers.
