Microsoft Security Essentials 2 Released, Still the Best Darn AntiVirus Around
Time: 09:34 EST/14:34 GMT | News Source: *Linked Within Post* | Posted By: Chris Hedlund

Windows: We've learned to stop worrying about AntiVirus software since Microsoft released their great Microsoft Security Essentials suite, but today it gets even better, improving Windows Firewall integration, network traffic inspection, and an heuristic scanning engine. Microsoft's next version of Security Essentials is actually a pretty great update from its already-great predecessor. Microsoft's option has always been adequate at finding new malware without definitions, but the addition of an heuristic engine bumps its power up quite a bit. It may be subject to a few more false positives, but you're much less likely to get hit with malware than ever before.

Best darn AV around, huh? Despite no testing of any kind and an article that's light on data and heavy on marketing, if Whitson Gordon says it's the best then that's good enough for me.

"Despite no testing ... "

Well, there was this link in the article to another article which went here:

http://www.av-comparatives.org/images/stories/test/performance/performance_dec_2010.pdf

Microsoft was tied for 4th at 179 (the winner had 181)

"So while Microsoft Security Essentials wasn't the absolute winner in finding new malware without a definition available, it was the highest ranking free option, and it did perform best among those apps that had "Very few false alarms"—perfect for software that's free and light on resources."

Also: Microsoft Security Essentials rated best free antivirus for Windows

Shouldn't people read the article (and click on the links in it) before criticizing it?

#3: My criticism, that MSE is not the best AV solution around as per the author's claims to the contrary, is still perfectly valid. I've been following av-comparatives for the past few years but did not know their latest report was out. Despite my bad, it still shows that MSE isn't the best solution. I do believe MSE is a good solution in general, just not the best as the author claimed. It may be the best free solution, but that's not what the author said either.

As long as Java is being used no antivirus will be %100 effective.

#6 By 12071 (124.168.53.188) at 12/18/2010 12:49:20 AM
#2 So just to confirm, so I've got the lingo down pat... "Best Darn" = 4th

#5 Umm, what does Java have to do with the state of antivirus?

I use Eset NOD32, doesn't get in the way, doesn't slow things down in any noticeable fashion and does it's job.

I personally love, love, love MSE and have nothing but hateraid for NOD.

Why you ask? NOD as far as I can tell is worse than a viral infection. It is impossible to turn off and impossible to delete. God forbid that NOD is interacting negatively with one of your programs. You have one of two choices either remove the offending program or do a clean install of the OS without NOD.

MSE is for me has been a fabulous program. It just works. Better yet, it is free and updates daily. My understanding is that it is also resistant to rootkits and NOD is not.
Why would one choose anything else for a home machine? Look for AVG/Avast/NOD/Symantic etc. to disappear on consumer Windows based machines in the next several years. MSE is just that good.

It's know by most that Java is great for malware.

#9 By 16797 (99.236.143.109) at 12/18/2010 2:38:32 PM
#8 How so? Because.. all Java apps run inside Java Virtual Machine, first you have to exploit some hole there (if present, since user could be running slightly different Java version, etc). And when you do that, then you still have to exlpoit another hole somewhere in underlying operating system. Plus, Java, just like .NET, is manged code (verifiable before execution).

I'm not saying it's impossible, just hard(er) to do.

#6: ESET NOD32 is very good and has been for years. According to AV Comparatives the best performing both on demand and lowest missed samples is G Data. I've been following AV Comparative's posted test results for years now. ESET, G Data and Avira have consistently tested at or near the top.

#8: Is Java set to save temp files on your machine? Change the settings to have it check for updates more often then once per month, the default, and to not save temp files. As you know, running any browser sandboxed for casual browsing is ideal when the sandbox is set to delete files and not allow any downloads.

The company I work for has a IT group that insists on using IE and because of that all Java temp file settings had to be set not to save.

The money being spent on IT is unbelievable. <_<

I've had very little trouble with NOD32, and I've been using it for 5 years now.

It's the only one written in assembly, which is why you can't even tell it's there.

It has caught _everything_ that has ever tried to invade my machine, including numerous drive-by attempts from infected rotating ad's on web sites (the biggest malware issue IMHO).

I use MSE on my XP virtual Machines though. I think it works well.

It's just no NOD32, nor do I expect it to be.

Any chance it works on Server 2008 or Vail?

#13,14,15 Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010. Same AV core.

Available to Technet Subscribers.

#17 By 241766 (99.241.211.171) at 12/20/2010 12:22:50 AM
Just a slight nit pick, but the AV Comparatives report linked above is totally useless for this discussion, as it only tests MSE 1.0, not 2.0. It is impressive that 1.0 did so well in the performance tests, but the really important tests are the ones that show how well the various AV products do against viruses themselves.

Yup - Version 2.0 (released) installs on Win2k8-R2 just fine.

I'm not going to get into is it the BEST out there or not, but for the price of ones already paid for windows license I find it pretty darn good for the consumer\home and the very small business market.

Eset Smart Security here. Been a user for years without any problems.

#18,

Holy shit that's great news :) I can kick ClamWin back to the ocean :)

#17 "Microsoft's free Security Essentials antivirus software identified 98% of over half a million malware samples, an accuracy rating an independent testing company called "very good" today."

http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9138730/Independent_tester_Security_Essentials_very_good_

Not as good in unknown items because 1.0 lacked heuristic detection which has been adde din 2.0

#22 By 2960 (72.205.26.164) at 12/20/2010 2:32:49 PM
Bonus!

Does indeed appear to work on Server 2008 and Vail :)

I'm sure it's not supported though.

#23 By 95132 (96.25.183.211) at 12/21/2010 6:14:29 PM
TechLarry - I don't know about officially supported or not on the win2k8 platform. However the beta or RC would not install on win2008 (though there was a way to manually get it on). My working assumption was while win2k8 isn't the target market for the product there was no good technical reason from blocking that platform so they listen to those of us that moaned about it, particularly given Vail and decent amount of folks using win2k8 as their workstations.
