I think that WHS was cutting into SBS and BPOS sales, and really, BPOS (or whatever they call it these days - 365, Hosted Lync - some combo of these), is the driver.
Think about it... small companies with "other" cloud based services (Google's online offerings) with <10 total systems, or even fewer that needed: a) reliable backup, b) simple file sharing, and c) remote access to systems and files... WHS did all of these and with single instance storage in DE v1, it was cheap, really cheap to add on to, and... dirt cheap to maintain.
Add a few bucks are year for Google's commercial offering and who would need SBS, or some hybrid solution built around SBS and BPOS/Lync/365.
So Microsoft took WHS out back, put a bean-counter's uber high powered gun to its headless little head and turned the whole thing into a lovely little cloud of crimson mist - while simultaneously pulling a TSA finger sweep on enthusiast users and micro-business owners.
This one was about recurring revenue and not about customer wants and needs.
I'll use this as a counter whenever a small customer considers Microsoft's hosted solutions - saying: "yeah... it's cheap and pretty good stuff, and yeah, I cost just a little more, but unlike them <MS>, I won't ever dump you, or TSA your backside."
So, "Thanks" Microsoft, for making things easier for those of us in the channel that use your servers and tools to focus on customers with a laser like focus built on earned trust. We don't sit around with lawyers and accountants trying to figure out ways to "maximize" revenue at the expense of those that support us most.... and you wonder why people keep on hating you? Don't, just look at the crap you pull all the time and the LA Phone Book sized list of things you start, swear you're behind, and then dump the second some snott with an MBA says so. If Ballmer is as good a man as I think he is, he'll read this and then whip out a golf club and start smashing the desks of the idiots dragging his company into a toilet.
