Even though the first test version of 'Windows 8' is expected to be released next year, there are very few clues as to what Microsoft has in store for its flagship OS. Will it be an iterative release, building on the success of Windows 7, or a radical redesign that takes the company in a completely different direction? I really hope not; at least give people a choice.
Personally I am not interested in a "hosted" OS. For big corportation it would be of course different: they could decide to host the OS intrnally in a private cloud. |

| I suspect that this means that several "accessories" now included in the Windows OS can be separated out and hosted as an app on line. This modularization could be good for the customer. |

There is nothing in the slides that indicates that Windows would not load into a VM from a local installation instead of from "the cloud". Since ~40% of people with PC's do not have a broadband connection cloud hosting, if forced, would be the beginning of the end for Windows Home versions. It ain't gonna happen as depicted in the article. One may have the option of having the installation backed up to the cloud.
Running Windows from the Internet would be too painful in an age of SSD's that allow the OS to boot in seconds. |

Ditto #5. It actually just looks like the slides showing desktop virt and looks like they may be pushing that down to the consumer line assuming that's who the slides were presented too, though those look like slides that would be presented to business as the road map there on.
They looked strangely familiar... sure enough there the april 2010 infrastructure conference, hexus croped that out of mary's original post though maybe just for space but both of them seem to be making noise about things that were already well known and even recently talked about again with the release of remoteFX coming in sp1 for R2\7 and in some recent channel 9 presentation - it's all aimed at business for now (w8). I could see how a remote desktop rented from some provider accessible anywhere any time would be attractive to a segment of the consumer market a couple yeard from now and even more as time goes by. cute little product from hp in that space: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46bi-j_KzCQ |
