Team Xbox have posted a Q&A with Justin Forrest, Games Designer for Codemasters about the upcoming boxing game, Mike Tyson Heavyweight Boxing. Here is part of the Q&A
Tell us about the game. What makes it different from other boxing titles?
Justin F: The game was developed as a confrontational representation of Heavyweight Boxing. We've incorporated both Sim and beat 'em up elements to produce fast furious gameplay that should appeal to fans of the sport and to beat 'em up gamers. We deliberately focused on the heavyweight side of the sport and have included 16 current heavyweights including heavyweight contenders Hasim Rahman, Chris Byrd, and Kirk Johnson, a few well known greats such as 'Terrible' Tim Witherspoon and Larry Holmes, and a myriad of up and coming heavyweights including Olympic Gold medal holder Audley Harrison, and of course the most recognized heavyweight of his generation 'Iron' Mike himself.
The recent video game representations of the sport have either taken the dry 'simulation' approach to boxing (as with KO Kings) or have been pure arcade button mashers (as with Ready to Rumble). We've attempted to bridge the gap and produce a boxing game that conjures up the drama and tension of Heavyweight Boxing with real fighters and great variation of moves and styles as well as incorporating beat 'em up elements such as special combos that have end effects unique to each boxer (e.g. Tyson's 'Iron Fists' combo has great KO potential if landed and will also increase the damage of Tyson's punches for 10 seconds after the combo has landed.)
