Microsoft Decision Triggers RealNames Closure | |

Effective May 13, 2002, RealNames Corporation ceased normal business operations. Eighty-three employees have been terminated as the company begins an orderly wind down. During the wind down process, RealNames will be liquidating its assets and making every effort to maximize their value for the benefit of its creditors and shareholders. RealNames' Keywords work in the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser pursuant to an agreement the two companies reached in March 2000. Microsoft has chosen not to renew its distribution contract, which ends on June 30, 2002, with RealNames. On June 30th, the Keyword service will no longer be available. | ||

Anyone else notice a trend here?
There are some incredibly stupid people with a seemingly good idea who build up their entire business around Microsoft in some way. They don't hedge bets, they don't pursue alternatives, they just attach themselves like lamprey to Microsoft. When Microsoft shakes them off, or decides not to pay them anymore (since when was it required by law that Microsoft pay RealNames?), then suddenly Microsoft is this big bad meanie. I guess this RealNames guy figured Microsoft was now required for life to pay him charity to keep his business going. I can't believe this guy NEVER thought of the future. I mean, what was his five year plan? Did he think browsers would be around forever and that MS would just keep pumping him full of money? This guy gets the 2002 Stupid Businessman Award. | I agree 100%. One of the first thing they teached us back in the University was to diversify. Diversify your suppliers, your clients, markets etc. Btw IBM is going to lay off hundreds if not thousands of people, same is happening with HP n Compaq but this is not something related to MS so it doesn't drag attention. |

| Furthermore and this is this site fault the "article" is in the reality a press release from Realnames Corporation and not an editorial from Business Wire. Posting press releases as editorials is becoming a habit here and a really bad one! |

The CEO of Realnames posted a diatribe blaming Microsoft for everything, claiming their monopoly prevents real innovation. As if a duplicate DNS service is "innovation"? But what's interesting to note is that RealNames only existed because of the monopoly, because their technology was not browser independent but rather some sort of backend infrastructure service.
The plain fact is that without Microsoft fronting the bill, this company would have never gotten off the ground. |

#7... Microsoft was a MAJOR OWNER (TWENTY PERCENT) of RealNames. So, perhaps you should check your facts too. They invested in them over two years ago, as part of their original agreement. Their decision to drop support was simply a matter of pruning a bad investment. Thats their perogative, being that its THEIR MONEY.

LOL. The RealNames CEO is complaining now that MS has control over the automatic IE searching...
