Remember the bad old days of the Internet, when it wasn’t a given that one primary objective of any Web site should be to work equally well in any modern browser? Some sites slapped “Best Viewed With Internet Explorer” or “Best Viewed With Netscape Navigator” logos (or both of them) onto their home pages, like perverse badges of honor. It was like turning onto a highway and discovering signs saying it was best driven in a Buick or a Kia. | ||

| The proprietary web is dead. These days, the only sites that will customize their code for a specific browser (other than bug workarounds) are getting paid by that browser vendor. Otherwise, they haven't much to gain versus the potential audience they will lose. |

| #2: Yes, I read it. Why do you ask? I'm not slamming MS here. I have no problem with MS sponsoring a web site and, in turn, that site features whatever tech MS wants them to. No problem at all with that. I'm saying that it's no longer a viable way to increase marketshare in any significant fashion. |

| #4: Ah, I see what you mean. 'Proprietary' is a poor choice of words on my part when I meant to convey the featuring of the strengths of a particular browser. This will all be moot soon enough. I'm sure that the other major browser vendors are already working on a GPU-assisted renderer. |

So far the only site I found that looks different with IE9 is Ebay. All the backgrounds are light grey instead of white, which is easier on the eyes.
I do wish it had some size options, the space above the tabs seem excessive, maybe in the final release. |

One thing is clear.
We do NOT need this. Things are complicated enough without Microsoft pulling this crap, be it simply marketing or whatever. The industry does NOT need it. Corporate America support organizations certainly don't need it. I have enough people upgrading their browser without authorization without them seeing "Works Best With Internet Explorer 9" popping up all over the place. | I've seen plenty of sites with [the equivalent to] "best viewed with Chrome" or 'best viewed with Firefox" but those are generally open source fanatics. |
