I love the title of this post - Microsoft admits, as if there were some kind of conspiracy!
After 6 days of often heated cross examination, Prosecutor Latch finally got Microsoft to break. In a teary confession Microsoft admitted to mistakenly including a slide that predicted better sales for its Windows Phone 7 Series devices than actual forecasts show. Jury deliberations begin today and are expected to take several days. The maximum punishment carries a mild case of embarrassment although States Attorney Kabuki will push for the death penalty under the hater provision of ABM statute. |

#2: According to the dictionary (and I don't mean the one of MS-defined words, you know, where open means closed and free means constrained?), the use of the word pretty much matches the situation perfectly:
admit Main Entry: ad·mit Pronunciation: \əd-ˈmit, ad- Function: verb Inflected Form(s): ad·mit·ted; ad·mit·ting Etymology: Middle English admitten, from Latin admittere, from ad- + mittere to send Date: 15th century transitive verb 1 a : to allow scope for : permit <admits no possibility of misunderstanding> b : to concede as true or valid <admitted making a mistake> So what's the problem again? There is nothing nefarious here, unless you're working with the assumption that it was a deliberate attempt by MS to mislead (which I doubt in this case.) |

Badgering the witness, Your Honor!
Leave it to Latch to suck the life out of a perfectly OK joke. Context is everything my friend, and in this context I took the word Admit to have a negative connotation, as I'm sure many here did. The first sentence of the actual story says it much better: "IDG.net Microsoft acknowledged on Friday that it used an inaccurate number to represent research company IDC's sales forecast for the upcoming Windows Phone 7 platform." #4: After almost a month of overseeing some software/hardware certification testing, there is no such thing as a funny joke in my life right now.
Context is not everything. Perception and intent are always along for the ride. Retired? No. I still pop in once a week or two just for kicks if I'm bored at work and nothing else is going on. Still waiting for the AW site redesign (what's it been now, 3-4 years?) I notice that the thread counts are almost never in double-digits anymore. Gone are the days of the long Ketchum vs Latch tennis matches. Now I'm reading this hilarious article where MS is complaining and warning about the possibility and potential for damage that can be done by an abusive monopoly to a market. But, strangely, they only feel this way when the particular market is search. Funny that. |
