Here's my opinion if Garett Rogers really believes this then he's not been paying attention, not even close. What utter garbage.
One could argue I suppose the 2001-2003 time frame this might have had some truth but despite any public comments they very much have seen them as threat in several spaces (beyond search) since about the time frame Google went public. Garett's free to argue the response hasn't necessarily been direct or all that effective to date but that MS doesn't see them a threat? This is sadly typical of what passes for articles now on "tech trade" websites.
One only has to look at the various msn related efforts, hotmail acquisition, windows live development, ad platforms, online Office, bing, azure,etc to see that for years MS has been working to not cede certain battlefields to Google.
