Microsoft to discontinue its mid-market server line | |

Microsoft is discontinuing its Essential Business Server (EBS) product family, company officials said on March 5, and have decided against releasing an EBS 2010 product. According to a post on the Essential Business Server team blog, Microsoft is ceasing development of future iterations of EBS as of June 30, 2010. Microsoft is attributing the shift to “a natural market shift in midsize business’ preferences toward creating their own IT solutions.” | ||

| Microsoft can be a damn confusing company. It wasn't very long ago that at a MS seminar EBS was the "future" of server software. |

And this is not a $50/100 piece of software.....
I wonder how they are going to "compensate" people who bought ESB with Software Assurance. |

what a shame this is. I've never trusted them with this product line and it had such promise, too. We've never "sold" this product, but have a few small customes - law and engineering firms that bought into it with other providers and when their integrations didn't go well, we were brought in to fix things. So we've inherited a few of them. There were some really nice features that would have otherwise been more difficult and costly for small companies.
I suspect that they will be pushing deep into the channel with hosted services of their own and cutting out smaller companies that used to service this product line. |

| Lloyd: I would not trust Microsoft with hosted services until the day when said service(s) become responsible for generating a significant portion of corporate profit, and not just a here today-gone tomorrow toy or a counterpart to a Google service. Any thing other than a serious money maker will always be one step away from the chopping block. We would all be better served if honest status reports of any and all given product's future were presented by Microsoft. |

#3: I think that you dead right.... but MS is making the wrong gamble.
#4: Excellent point! The time of BG and strategic visions when MS kept pushing until succeded are over; bean counters with shortsighted,tactical only, plans are in control now. What I am afraid is that the next one on the chop could be SBS, which we use. I am not interested in hosted solutions so whatever version of SBS we will be using will have to last for a long time.... 4,5, I agree. Even though one may work with MS, and I do like their software, one has to keep sober about them and understand that like every business, they are there to win - no matter who they hurt.
I've always maintained that understanding and have always thought of ourselves as competitors - even though I'll work as closely with them as is necessary. It makes for an interesting dichotomy and surely from time to time, they stun me with how stupid they are. And Fritzly is right, Gates would never allow this sort of thing to go on. If a product line started to hurt devs, and partners, he quietly kill it by pulling away technical emphasis - leaving the bean counters to build it themselves. It's not Ballmer either - he's very similar, but doesn't have the stroke with devs in the same way. It's just one big company and it acts like it much of the time. This move is however going to bite them so hard. Many small firms have to have on premise stores, period. |

| On a totally unrelate note, but unsure of where else to pose the query, after not visiting this site for approximately a year, I was wondering what happened to the site re-write that was being talked about (and underway as I recall) during that time frame. |

This product line was never going to take off, I'm glad they are killing it off early, just didn't fit, and was confusing to potential customers and also would cut into SBS.
SBS in general is a different animal and I expect it to continue. Trying to move mid and sbs masses toward hosted solutions is a disaster waiting to happen, a solid number either don't want to or can't do this even if they wanted (legal issues), though I'm MS can build a solid solution that meets the needs for some. |
