The bad news: More than 2,000 highly-trafficked Web sites are still not compatible with Internet Explorer 8 and require IE’s Compatibility View support to display properly. The good news: That is down from about 3,100 sites a year ago. The new data is courtesy of a March 2 post on the Microsoft IE blog. A year ago, when Microsoft first released Internet Explorer (IE) 8, it got kudos for making its browser somewhat more standards-compliant than previous versions. But increasing standards compatibility meant more incompatibility, as many Web-site developers had tweaked their sites to take advantage of far less standards-friendly IE 6 and IE7 and weren’t in any rush to make changes to accommodate IE 8. | ||

Bwahahaha.. OMG, are they serious?
Tell me microsoft, then why does one of our websites which is written using Web standards and CSS from the ground up DOES NOT WORK in IE8 and IE8 needs to be in compatibility mode? Opera, Firefox and Chrome all work JUST FINE and since IE is used by most of our vistiors, we have to HACK the CSS to get it to view properly.. Oh yea, that's right, it must be microsoft "standards" which are needed to it work properly.. |

Yes they are serious, are you not reading this properly?
If the web site is coded for IE6 standards and COMPENSATES for IE and it doesn't realize that IE8 is NOT IE6 and sends the IE6 crap to IE8, it doesn't display properly. It really is that simple, and people COMPENSATING for IE6 need to either STOP or at least realize that IE8 and IE6 are DIFFERENT. |

#2, Yep! Exactly!
"If" a site is otherwise CSS2 compliant and validates, and IE 8 "still" persists in displaying the compatibility button, it is as simple as adding this line of code: <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=8" /> How hard is that? It is nauseating continually reading things going on about IE 8 and CSS2 and "standards" compliance - when IE 8 is the MOST CSS2 compliant browser there is. |

| A better idea might be for MS to adhere to standards better so that web designers don't have to put custom crap in there to better help IE figure it out. I know that's crazytalk but it's the best I can come up with. |

Thanks Latch, I guess that's what I was trying to say..
Why should I have to put in a special meta-tag just to tell IE8 to run IE8 compatible. Follow the CSS and Web standards (as every other browser does) so IE hacks of any kind are not needed. |

IE and millions of important sites and browser applications existed long before "standards" evolved to the point that they have. IE 8's compatibility mode is there for users who need to access those sites and where the compatibility button is encountered, and as necessary, a user can render the site in quirks mode, vice IE 8 native - and this is a bad thing?
Also, adding the one simple line (as in bold below) to the top of any new site that validates entirely, this is too much to ask? Too hard? Too time consuming to copy and paste it?
