A version of FLASH shipped with Windows Vista/7.
For a time, as all vendors may, Adobe distributed FLASH via Windows Updates - most especially critical security updates to FLASH, where in the spirit of consumer interest and cooperation, Adobe used a distribution channel that has been open to all for some time.
Further, a steady stream of Adobe FLASH updates has been provided, requiring reinstallation and in many cases, manual uinstallation, a restart (to delete files alread in use) and reinstallation. A new install being required, now uses a download manater with its own RMI/COM client control and a default Google Toolbar that has to be cleared manually to avoid it.
FLASH remains the number one reason browser sessions and tabs crash, according to our own logs and experience. Please see, (it is as relevant today as it was when written) http://blog.libertech.net/blogs/lketchum/archive/2008/01/29/gritty-nits-fix-internet-explorer-7-crashes-in-vista.aspx The negative affects of FLASH and poorly written action scripts impact users of all platfroms upon which it is run.
By contrast, SL/WPFe/WCF are turning out to be most wonderful - things like native H.264 streaming from IIS 7 without conversion (under media services). Media aside, SL is going to change the web and drive RIA's that leverage the best of all - like the HTML 5 embed tag used in the example above to stream media to iPhones!
