Why I hate Microsoft Office 2010 | |

But most important, Office 2010 is slow. The individual applications load like molasses on my Windows 7-based netbook, and common tasks -- like checking for new mail across several hosted POP3 accounts -- chew up way too many CPU cycles. I find myself closing Outlook 2010 in between e-mail checking sessions because it's simply too demanding to leave open all the time. | ||

| you know what - I'm tired of the 'beta' excuse. I'm sorry but Microsoft Office is not a beta. It's a mature product that's been around for over a decade. A few changes from version to version shouldn't completely hamstring this product. For example, I'm trying to do something simple in Word 2010 like select some text or whatever and it doesn't work. What's going on here? It worked in Office 2007. Did they forget how to do the same function in 2010? Are they reinventing the product with each release? I don't get it... |

Actually I think the author has missed the real story. A $300 netbook does not have the muscle to run full blown desktop applications. Maybe MSO2010 is slow, but you are not going to ever convince me that a cheap netbook will ever run anything well. This ranks right up there with porting full blown Windows on ARM architecture... Yea right!
Thinking "Vista Compatible" anyone... Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. |

| #4: You are correct. Atom processors can "handle" any program. However, with only 1-GB of RAM and a CPU that may have been cutting edge six years ago (based on performance, not power savings) everything runs slower on an Atom than on "real" notebooks, unless the notebook has been strongly underclocked for longer battery life. |

#3 clearly you're completely unaware of the process of development. The fact is it's a beta and they have been changing things under the hood so as you can expect, it's going to not run at its best, is it? Use you sense.

#3 Doesn't know what the hell he is talking about. First of all, MS Outlook has been changed to include the ribbon interface. So this is a new feature that needs to be tested. There is a reason why it wasn't included in 2007. Second, like #6 said, they are changing things under the hood.
I've been running the beta version for 4 months now. It runs smooth. I never have to close any programs. The guy that reviewed this should just STFU. He has no clue what the hell he is doing. I'm surprised he hasn't complained it doesn't run on Windows 95. |

I had the preview version installed and using daily since day one. No real issues.
Just installed the beta this morning. We'll have to see... They did not fix a biggie I sent them a frownie on. The search for user box is ridiculously small. And, being a ribbon interface, you can't change or adjust shit. |

How exactly is he misinformed and an idiot? He doesn't like the UI and says it's slow on his netbook. Is he misinformed for thinking he can run the bloated Outlook 2010 on a netbook? #7: I've been running the beta version for 4 months now. It runs smooth. I never have to close any programs. The guy that reviewed this should just STFU. You've been running it for the past 4 months on a netbook, have you? Or on a quad-core box stuffed with RAM? btw do you always tell people to shut up when their opinion differs from yours? |

#1 Really, personal shots?
I already stated that 2010 was slower than 2007. Which do you have a problem with, the reading or the comprehending? The whole personal 'opinion' on the Office UI is worthless, and shows a clear lack of understanding of UI progression. There is a reason Microsoft is moving users away from Menus aka 'Word Lists', as they are older than GUI concepts and it really is time to move beyond them. The author's examples show his lack of brain power to consider 'right clicking' on the Junk Mail Folder and select 'Empty', and amazes me that he is instead is trying to find a toolbar button or menu instead of 'going' to the object and asking the application to perform the action on the object. Maybe people will never get beyond dated UI interaction concepts if he is an example of any average user. Office 2010 works well on a Netboook, especially when considering the UI design, as you can easily flip the 'minimize ribbon' and work on displays with less vertical pixels available easier. Using Outlook 2010 on a Netbook because of the ability to minimize the Ribbon makes it far more usable and clean, and many users will appreciate this being available in all the 2010 applications. Performance is still below 2007 on things, but as with the 2007 beta, I (and my crack team of techs) expect this to improve just as it did with 2007. PS (Where are the ActiveWin moderators, or is Latch immune from being an A**?) #4 The capabilities of a Netbook are a valid view, but don't forget that they are capable of performance that was considered 'average' 4 or 5 years ago. There are people that do run full desktop applications on Netbooks, maybe not 'full time', but in a pinch, they work rather well. I myself have been known to open Photoshop, CorelDraw, or Visual Studio at the airport to review, edit, and even produce content rather easily. Sometimes when you travel extra light, it is nice to still be able to 'do' things when needed, and performance is rather acceptable for the majority of applications out there. |

"Hate" is such a strong word. I prefer to see it as merely a lesser form of love, so while I truly love the UI of Office 2010, I really really love the familiarity and easier customizability of Office 2003's UI.
I don't like to speak ill of a new child, at least not within earshot of the proud parents. |
