Microsoft to open up Outlook data format | |

Microsoft said on Monday that it will open up the data format behind its Outlook program. In a blog posting, Microsoft group manager Paul Lorimer said the company is working to publish the specifications behind Outlook's .pst files. "Data portability has become an increasing need for our customers and partners as more information is stored and shared in digital formats," Lorimer wrote. "One scenario that has come up recently is how to further improve platform-independent access to e-mail, calendar, contacts, and other data generated by Microsoft Outlook." | ||

Can they make it so if I double-click on a pst file that it opens in Outlook?
Can they make them sharable? Can they make them accessible on read-only media or shares? Can they make them accessible from OWA? This post was edited by schwit on Monday, October 26, 2009 at 14:09. |

Can they first not make the default PST save location 7 levels deep on a hard drive, and even includes an invisible folder in the path?

Found a great trick to migrate Outlook files without hassling with .pst files. MS "MigWiz" works fantastic and saves a boatload of time and fuss.
I still back up my .pst files but it is a pain in the rear to restore them without the migration wizard. |

Can they make it so I stop using Gmail?
No way in hell... Nice hover ads btw - I activated 3 just mousing to the bottom of the page. Then activewin timed out when I first posted this comment, so I had to retype it again. Why does anyone bother with this site? |

Gmail is the best. However bigjobs, if you don't like AWIN, don't visit it. Nobody is forcing you to visit here. Why don't you go hide under a bridge where you belong.

| I access GMail through Outlook with all my other email accounts... Outlook can be configured for just about any email service available. |

| #7: I've been using Gmail for 4 years now and I've use their interface exactly once. Thunderbird does a decent job of interfacing with Gmail transparently. There is no excuse for using a web-based email interface unless you are in some Internet cafe somewhere. |

I used to think that way. I have found the web interface of gmail to be quicker and less bloated than Outlook (and the OWA interface). Search results are much faster than the indexed resource hungry results of Outlook. I used to swear by Outlook, but have found the gmail interface to be far superior. Now to convince Hilton IT to allow me to access my exchange email in gmail, and I will be set. |

| I use the Simple Mail plugin for FireFox to work with my Gmail. Never have had to use the web interface. |

Outlook for everything (including my gmail accounts). OWA & GMail for afk viewing.
Granted older versions of outlook were bloated the newest version I've had my hands on is fantastic. OWA on Exchange 2003 is pretty balls but I've heard great things about it on 2010. I've never even seen 2007's. Like I said "GMail for Fun" It's a cute proof of webmail concept but in the end it's nothing special. And Live Mail is better if I had to force myself to use a web only e-mail solution. |

| I am curious as to why anyone would think Live mail is better than Gmail? I am not saying one is right or wrong, but I can't seem to wrap my head around any Live advantages. |

I like Live's web interface. They do a nice job trying to protect you from crappy emails. Plus I make good use of the SkyDrive.
I only mentioned interfaces because #4 ask if they can make it so he stopped using gmail, which to me meant that he uses the web interface. I understand that some people still use Outlook, Thunderbird, or some other way to fetch email from gmail without touching the web interface, I was just making the comment for those of us that still do. |
