Price cuts for two video game consoles, the Xbox and the PlayStation 2, are likely to kick in as soon as this month, due to slowing retail sales ahead of the summer months, an analyst said on Monday. In a research note, Gerard Klauer Mattison analyst Edward Williams said he believes price cuts will be announced at the industry's annual Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) because a drop in sales has retailers worried ahead of the summer, usually the industry's weakest season. Williams said he believes Microsoft Corp, fighting to gain a share in the competitive game machine market, will kick off the cuts, bringing the Xbox down to $199 from $299 at a news conference scheduled for May 20.

I may actually pick up an X-box then! Even if the games are exspensive atleast I don't have to spend $500 anymore just to get the console and like 2 games.
Go market forces, otherwise MS would have kept the price up in the sky(just like they do for Windows 95--it still costs $89 to upgrade)!

XBOX games can't be pirated unless you have an emulator or a dual-layer burner. All of the game discs are dual-layer DVDs with a security lock.
PS/PS2 games that are copied are normal CDs and single-layer DVDs.
The GameCube has apparantly been cracked, but getting the discs is a slight problem there, unless you can use mini-CDs/DVDs.
#4, why would you want to upgrade to Windows 95 when newer, better, SUPPORTED, OSes are available for the same price?

You're welcome, #6. :-)
Another thing, IIRC, is the XBOX (and possibly the Gamecube) spin game discs backwards. I'm not sure if this is true or not, though.

Damnit, I just bought an XBox last month. :(
But if the PS2 drops to $199 I might buy one of those also just to play Grand Theft Auto III.

In Response to #5,
I still know people who run systems that can't handle Win 98, and when they lose the Win 95, they are surprised that it still costs the same price to buy 95 as it is for 98/ME/XP. Also, up until last year, we were running win 95 and 98/ME were already out and it still cost us the same price. Its the principal of the issue and the only reason MS can do it (mantain the price of the software) is because they are a monopoly.

Sodablue, GTA III is comming to the PC soon. Save $199, and get the PC version.
It's also slated for the XBOX.

They don't lower the prices down because then everybody would be buying an obsolete OS.

#14... the last time I checked. Microsoft WROTE, and continue to OWN Windows95... therefore they have EVERY right to price it as they see fit.
Your gross view of antitrust law gives a bad name to those that actually understand such things.

For those claiming that the only reason Microsoft doesn't lower the price of Win95 and continue to sell it is because they have a monopoly... I offer you this evidence:

Yep, that's right. Apple has decided to stop supporting MacOS9 because they wish to push people towards using MacOSX. If they don't have a monopoly why would they do that? Why aren't they selling MacOS9 for $25 and OSX for $100?
Oh yeah, smart business.

soda, you're an idiot--Apple is ending OS 9 development--they actually still and will continue to support users of other versions--in fact, they still support OpenStep, NextStep, AU-IX, etc.... And they are not a monopoly. The only impact of selling previous versions of Windows at a lower price is that MS cannot control the upgrade cycle as much. This creates competition (with MS themselves) and offers cheaper alternatives to consumers. If consumers choose to buy this product, all that shows me is that the added features of XP and future versions are not worth it to the consumer. It's MS's fault that they said they arbitrarily assigned a value to their OS and they maintain their price to encourage upgrades. It's this arbitrary pricing that is a true indicator of a monopoly.
By the way, OS X ships and includes OS 9. Don't know how you can be abandoning and forcing consumers to a new version when that new version includes the old one. So your price scenario (buy X for $100, get OS 9 for $0)--yes, good business!
