#3, Yes Sir, it is. An increasing number of people are discovering that the Zune software is really great and that it requires no Zune device at all.
There is also a marketplace trial, which allows one to experience what discovering new media in the Zune Marketplace is all about - again, no Zune hardware device, or money are required.
Try "Mixed View" and use it to explore and discover media - that within the marketplace and your own. Easy controls at the upper left of the software's content area allow one to quickly toggle between collections - their own, marketplace and protected/unprotected media.
It's pretty amazing software and deserves a look. I should mention that on the devices, it also shines and searching and downloading directly to the device from the marketplace is easy and fast. Similarly, one may tag a song playing on the radio and download it directly and since the device, like any CE based device, can multi-task (unlike any iWhatever), downloads and on-device shopping occur as media is being played and without interruption.
Yes, there is a large combined installer, but there are also platform specific installers and a native x64 bit version is available. Things like apps and games are side-loaded, reducing the package size.
