As Microsoft gears up for the release of Windows 7, it looks like distressing news may be in the works for the software titan. A recent survey of informational technology (IT) administrators revealed that 59 percent have no plans to adopt the new platform and more than a third may delay implementation until the end of 2010. In fact, only 5.4 percent stated that they will move to the new system in 2009. | ||

With the release of Win7 [or about to], this probably signals a near final nail in the coffin for Vista. Who in the right mind would deploy Vista now [OK, except the Feds!] with Win 7 around the corner. You got XP support good until 2014. I think most places can survive another 15 months when SP1 for Win 7 is released [most larger companies will wait for the first SP before thinking of deploying].
Vista is [or has already been] the successor to Win ME. A dudd. 3 years between major releases is actually too short. 4 years is better. MS really goofed when they allowed support to go past the regular 10 total years. Companies would switch faster with an April 2011 deadline instead of April 2014. |

I remember reading this type of article prior to the release of Windows XP. Businesses were happy running Windows 2000, consumes were still ugrading to Windows 98, there was no pressing need to upgrade, etc.
The more things change, the more the stay the same... |

Companies switch when it makes financial sense, but only if application compatability permits. Running past vendor end-of-life is commonplace. I've done it for WFW, Win98, WinNT, and three or four Linux distros. I'm currently doing it for network equipment and telephone PBXs. If I replaced hardware and software at vendor defined periods my ROA would be significantly reduced and I'd be out doing manual labor to support my family. Vista was destroyed by FUD.
7 hasn't had any bad press besides people saying its better than Vista. You'll see 7 on nearly all new windows machines. |

"The reason Windows 7 is going to be successful and the most secure operating system we've ever developed in the history of Microsoft is because of the pain we took on Vista. The pain we took on application (compatibility) and device (compatibility) was warranted. And could we have done a better job enabling our partner ecosystem? Surely, we could have. And, clearly, we paid a dear price for that." Would you categorize this statement from Kevin Turner, Microsoft's chief operating officer, as FUD? A lot of people here seems to be affected by the "Pagoda complex".... |
