| The author tells us what we already know except: Should your legal activated PC suddenly fail WGA you simply call MS using the telephone option on the Activate Windows screen. You will get transferred a couple of times until you are told, very clearly and calmly, to make a registry modification that allows you to reenter a new product key that the service rep gives you over the phone. Yes, it is not a fun process. But, it does work and MS does not give you a hard time about the WGA issue because they know that software is imperfect and needs to be fixed once in a while. |

That works great on an airplane at 30,000 feet while you are getting ready for that business meeting you are flying to...

#1) Could you tell me how many times you got in your car and had to call the manifacturer to verify that the serial # on the key corresponded to the one in their database? It never happeend to my car, it happened multiple times with office; even better twice I was abroad and once I dealt with an idiot who refused to activate it because while the hardware was the same the suite had been activated too many times! What if, for some kind of paranoia, I format and reinstall every week?
This is the same reason why I do not buy downoaded music and movies: too many limitations to my fair rights. |

I lost video in a server the other day and had to change out the board - an identical board - and had to re-activate. Didn't have to call, but had to re-activate.
Perhaps the most dangerous area around WGA are the new validation controls that in small business, or with single users, have to be installed manually before even automatic updates will install at all. So you take a tiny office <=5 PC's without a server and what then? We've gone into so many new shops where machines have not been updated in years - new WGA controls being the ONLY reason (aside from users not knowing what to do). I totally get the reason for WGA and what the goals are. That said, I DO NOT see it helping honest users at all. I have not seen Windows become less expensive to license - perhaps MS could publish numbers? We are all paying an enormouse price, because of piracy. I wish MS could isolate thieves and exclude decent people from all this. |

| I bought my XP professional a couple of months after release and have re-imaged various machines probably more than 10 times and never had to call for reactivation. |

If you load an image of the OS it does not ask to reactivate.In fact this is what I usually do: I install the OS and Office on a machine, image the installation and after that start adding other apps.
What I cannot really stand is the "verification" required each time you want to download an Office template etc. etc. |
