Do you pay dearly for the Apple logo, as Microsoft's Steve Ballmer claims? Or are Apple laptops really a good value, even though they aren't the least expensive models on the market? To find out, I first compared the least expensive Apple MacBook, the $999 white model, to two reasonably similar Windows laptops costing about the same amount. My goal was to see what you'd get, in terms of features and specs, if you spent $1000 on a MacBook versus the same amount spent on a Windows machine. | ||

| Comparing workstation-class laptops from Dell and HP to a MBP is not an equal comparison. Why? "Workstation" = ISV certification, not simply higher specs. Furthermore, the percentage performance bump of 2.66 GHz over a 2.4 GHz pales in comparison to the percentage difference in what Intel charges between them. |

When I was just shopping a few weeks ago I found some sweet gaming laptops that would put a macbook pro to shame for $900. One was a sager. Nice machine.
It seems when mac sites do these comparisons they always find the worst values on the PC side of things and never take into account the plethora of coupon codes and sales. They look at HP and Dell but not other brands. |

I've seen $900 Laptops. They should come with steel-toed shoes in case you drop them :)
I still personally think the ThinkPad is the only one that comes close to an Apple in style and usability. I haven't seen the new Apple chicklet keyboards in person yet. I fear I won't like them. If they are anything like the keyboards that were on the old TRS CoCo's, then yuck! Unfortunately, I have to say ThinkPad reliability is WAY down. I have to maintain about 20,000 of these things, and folks things have gotten a LOT worse since the Lenovo buy-out IMHO :( |
