Companies avoid competition if they can and as much as they can. Publicly, they might praise the virtues of “the market”, but none of them wants to be in a fiercely competitive market. It makes for a tough life. Markets with few competitors are far easier to navigate and generally more rewarding. And it’s plain sailing, if you’re a monopoly. Or is it? | ||

Hunger creates motivation; motivation has a correlation to risk taking. You can't be hungry when you are on top of the food chain. Middle management's only goal is food chain preservation, not creating new food chains.
An example of this would be hotmail, why does it take until 2009 for it to support free pop mail? This was a business decision meant to preserve a food chain. Honestly I am probably the only one amongst my friends that still actively use their hotmail account. I won’t even site “windows mobile” whoever is in charge of that should be fired. Side note, didn’t MS buy Danger a couple of years of ago, and where are the fruits of that purchase? With that said I hope that WinMobile 7 is huge a success and that MS has learned from prior mistakes |

I for one and really hoping to see some insane movement in their mobile os over 6.0. My contract is up in July and I may give a month or two before bailing to Blackberry. A friend of mine and I talk about this alot. MS pushed into this market when the environment just wasn't there to do it. They sank too much money into it too soon. I remember oohing and awing over a smart phone 6-7 years ago. That's back when dataplans were in the dollars/mb.
IMO the mobile unit over at MS has been the red headed stepchild until a little over a year ago when the IPhone caught on. The cost to put their OS on the phone is minor so I don't see that as much of an issue. They need to require hardware vendors to kick it up a notch or get out of it in general. Windows Mobile has never been that bad. But now competition will force it to either put up or get out. Either it does so I can continue writing software for it or I'm out for something better. |
