Survey: IE 6 most popular browser
Time: 03:35 EST/08:35 GMT | News Source: ZDNet | Posted By: Alex Harris

Microsoft's Internet Explorer 6.0 was the most popular browser on the Web last month, with a total global usage share of 44.7 percent, according to Net analysis company OneStat.com.

Microsoft IE 5.5 took the second spot with 26 percent of the global usage share, followed by IE 5.0 with 25 percent, AOL Time Warner's Netscape Navigator 4.0 with 1.6 percent, Netscape Navigator 3.0 with 0.5 percent and Opera 6.0 with 0.4 percent.

The numbers show that "Microsoft dominates the browser market with a total global usage share of 97 percent on the Web," said Niels Brinkman, one of the founders of OneStat.com. The privately held, Amsterdam-based company provides Web analysis software to companies such as Air France and Lycos, according to its site.

People that change their browser string to report IE do nothing other than shoot themselves in the foot. They will never get consideration from web developers if we can't identify them. Mozilla does not support "industry standards" better. IE wins hands down at that. I think you may have an argument for W3C standards, but that isn't exactly the same thing.

I don't know if you have ever heard of Mozilla's bug reporting system bugzilla. You may want to stop by there before you go espousing mozilla's superior standards support. There are still numerous issues that need be addressed before I would even consider using it. One needs look no further than their own bug reporting system to refute your argument #11.

What I think is interesting is if you try to convince people running Netscape 3.x or 4.x to finally upgrade to 6.x, their response is that Netscape 6.x is a "piece of dung".

When even the anti-MS/Netscape adherents don't like 6.x what does that really say about the product?

That's really sad that NS 3 has a larger market share than Opera.

RANT - Interesting comment, because I have tried Mozilla. I felt it performed better than NS6 but it certainly was not better than IE6. The one feature in Mozilla I wish was more universal is getting rid of the popup messages. But that one feature isn't enough to sacrifice speed and stability for.

But my point had to do with users who stubbornly hold onto NS 4 because they don't want to use Microsoft "crap" as they say. Why can't you at least get these people to switch?

#5 By 135 (209.180.28.6) at 5/1/2002 1:55:18 PM
JeffChapNet - Oh, I see where your confusion lies. IE does not barf when it is presented with improperly formatted tags, like a lack of a closing </BODY> tag, or such... Netscape does.

That doesn't mean that IE is not standards compliant, it means that IE is more robust and able to handle errors better. If it was not standards compliant, when it was presented with proper tags it would not render them correctly or at all. That's very different.

[Edited slightly in the spirit of and to promote sane conversation - TL] :)

IMHO, MSIE 6 is not as stable as IE 5.0, nor does it appear as fast and efficient as IE 5.0 to me.

It feels slow to me. I find it buggier than IE 5.0. It no longer fills in Email Subject Lines properly when you email a page. It hard-locks at random times. I've had it lock up XP and 2K so bad, I had to pull the big switch (Power Cord) to get the computer rebooted.

This is based on several computers using it, not just one.

IE 5.5 is no party winner either. It suffers from slow performance and isn't a mark of stability.

Now, IE 5.01. Now THERE'S a browser! Fast. Reliable. Gets the job done nicely.

IE used to be my favorite browser. That's changing. First, I never upgrade my Win2K systems past 5.0/5.01 any more. The systems are faster, more stable, and more enjoyable without the bloated, buggy 5.5 and 6.0 installed.

Secondly, Mozilla is starting to get my attention. If you haven't downloaded Mozilla 1.0 RC1 and checked out the Tabbed Browsing and Bookmark Grouping features, you really should.

Mozilla 1.0 RC1 is not quite as fast at rendering as IE 5.01 (IMHO), but IMHO is easily faster than IE 5.5 or 6.0.

Don't EVEN get me started on that poor-of-an-excuse browser for the Mac called IE 5.1. That think is history as soon as Mozilla is done.

TL based on your comments you are not competent enough to use a PC. I imagine most people find the task easy and intuitive but thats not to say its for everyone. I suggest you stick with your Macintosh and go post your hopes and dreams over on spymac.

Typical Mac User1: "Hey they came out with new colors for the iMac"
Typical Mac User2: "Wow Apple did it again THEY ARE SO INNOVATIVE!!!"
Typical Mac User1: "Yup you are right lets go buy it today!"

IMHO your comments are worthless. If it was so bad how do you explain IE6 being the most popular browser now?

RedAvenger,

Is it possible for you to go ONE day without insulting everyone you come into contact with?

I'm sorry I expressed an opinion, and it doesn't jive with yours. I'm sorry this caused you SO much grief and pain.

You know, it IS entirely possible for you to use IE6, and for me to use IE5, and for both of us to be completely happy.

Again, I'm sorry I've ruined your whole day, and caused you to post a message that made absolutely no sense nor had anything to do with the topic at hand.

#26 - You should probably stop regurgitating propaganda if you expect to be able to call people dolts and get away with it...

"a) they harmed Netscape by including their browser for free in their OS, illegally leveraging their OS monopoly. NS could no longer charge for their product because of this. Because NS was illegaly FORCED to give their browser away they now lost revenue to make their browser better. "

Oh ya? Then how do you explain that IE 3.0 gained over 35% market share (from about 1%)? IE 3.0 was not integrated or included with anything. 30% market share is the "holy grail" for any platform because once it is achieved; it forces developers to start adapting their code to work on that platform. IE 3.0 achieved this milestone for three reasons:

1.) It was a good browser. At least *as good* as Netscape 3.0.

2.) It could be used as a component in 3rd party applications, which Netscape could not.

3.) It was free, and downloadable on the web.

The free part is important, but Netscape was free to almost everybody as well at that point. All educational institutions (which made up the majority of online users in 1996/1997), used Netscape for free, and all people who attended those institutions could use Netscape for free. That pretty much covered everybody.

"b) microsoft has often withheld information and API's to developers of 3rd party products that would enable them to create software that would work on Windows as well as MS's own software. Hence microsoft has hindered other browser developers from making a better product. "

Ok. Give me an example. This was a claim in the original anti-trust trial, but was <B>never substantiated with any evidence</B>. There are plenty of APIs that aren't on MSDN, but that's not because Microsoft is "hiding them"... they are plainly visible in the header files included with the Win32 SDKs. If Microsoft wanted to hide them, don't you think they would have removed the header prototypes? The fact is, competitors were (and are) grasping at straws in attempts to get the government to crush Microsoft because they are too incompetent to do it themselves.

You should have had "c":

c) Because I listen to anything and everything people on Slashdot say, and question nothing. It's fun to hate Microsoft. So much fun, it's become almost a religion.

That would have been right on the money.

Ahhh boohoo TL. I don't insult everyone that I come into contact with. But when you say something like: "IE 6 SUCKS." You are going to hear from me. You have an awful lot of problems with IE6. More so than anyone I have come in contact with. If you don't realize this you are still in your Mac dreamland.

Just to let you know the topic was about IE's marketshare and you still haven't addressed my original question of "If it was so bad how do you explain IE6 being the most popular browser now? " which is again on topic.

Cry me a river TL.

I have no idea. All I know is that I'm not the only one I know that has problems with it.

Dude, it's MY HUMBLE OPINION. I don't like IE6. I like IE5. Sorry you disagree, but that's the way it is.

Bill Gates doesn't need your defense. Don't take it so personally!

Sheesh :)

IE has come with every version of Windows since the first version of Win95, which came with IE2.

IE never started gaining any ground until IE3, when it was actually on par with NS3, and then IE4 came out and it started surpassing Netscape, BEFORE it came bundled with any OS.

The real question is, did Microsoft really illegally bundle IE, or did they do it because it was a good idea, but it just so happened that it may have effected it's market position.

And then finally, #26, Netscape was already mostly free, the only people who payed for it were the ones who bought the CD or businesses, others just downloaded it without paying the registration fee. Not only that, but Navigator wasn't exactly Netscape's primary revenue source, not by a long shot, it was actually their web server that brought them the dough.

#13 By 2332 (129.21.145.80) at 5/1/2002 8:14:14 PM
#33 - The first version of IE to be integrated with *anything* was IE 4.0. By the time that came out, IE had gained critical market share mass of 35%.

"IE4.0 was the browser that crush netscape because of what ? because it's support alot of features that dont come with netscape and even form the W3C standard."

Incorrect. IE 4.0 actually supported standards a lot better than Netscape. Why? Well, because they had to. When Microsoft is the underdog, they support standards in an effort to even the playing field. When they are ahead, they try and lock people into Windows. (Typically.)

"So when IE optimised page come on the web user with netscape go to a site and hoooooo the site display like crap! they try with IE and hooooooo again the site is sooooo cool!"

Yup. But if IE didn't have the market share to encourage developers to use those wiz-bang features, the chances of a user hitting a page designed for IE is very small. The fact is, IE had to gain market share *before* it could start leveraging its extra features.

Raging Daemon,

It doesn't really matter whether Mozilla will ever be a standard. Those that like Mozilla, and where Mozilla gets the job done, can happily use Mozilla while others use IE.

I am by no means a Netscape fan. I can't stand Netscape 6. However, I do believe that Mozilla 1.0RC1 is a darned fine browser and has some unique features that IE does not that makes it a compelling addition to my system.

All of my main work, for now, remains done with IE. I prefer to use IE5.0, but use 6 when I don't have a choice.

That's what choice is all about. Something for everyone :)
