Next-Gen Windows Rumors Heat Up | |

Two interesting but uncorroborated looks at future Windows versions had the rumor mills working overtime this weekend. The first report is an "official" Microsoft UK magazine that claims the company will release Windows XP Second Edition (SE) in early 2003. The second report is a supposed look at the next major Windows version (code-named Longhorn) and its new Start menu replacement. Are these reports genuine? The XP SE story appears in "Microsoft Windows XP--The Official Magazine," which the UK's Future Publishing produces. Dated June 2002, the issue describes XP Service Pack (SP1), a follow-up called XP SE, and the differences between the two releases. "Essentially XP SP1 is a free collection of enhancements and patches for Windows XP," the story reports. "Windows XP SE is a bigger upgrade--including [Internet Explorer] IE 7 and DirectX 9--which you will have to pay for if you want it. When can I get them? Windows XP SP1 is out this summer...Windows XP SE is due [in] early 2003." | ||

| So this is more of a new installation CD with IE 7 and DX 9 already included, instead of buying the old XP and then going out to download the latest IE 7 and DX 9 for MS. For the people already owning XP then we will just need to new browser and DX. At least that is what I get. That was about the only thing 98 SE had, except I think they had a new kernel as well. |

Well in the story last week people were complaining that Microsoft doesn't periodically issue new releases with all the latest service packs, patches and so forth. Seems that an SE release is a response to that.

Not hardly. WinME was a combination of every crash-producing bug Microsoft had left on the shelf. This thing was a horrid piece of junk that should never have been released. Reminds me of Mac System 7.5.1 when the PowerMac's first came out. Any old timers here will certainly remember that disaster (and Open Transport 1.0). <<<<shivers>>>>. The most reliable version of Win98 (IMHO) was the original release with all patches applied. Win98se had several inherent engineering problems that still have not been fixed to this day. TL |

| You have to pay for Windows Media Player 8 and no one seems to be complaining about that. Want the newest Media Player from MS...well, you'll have to buy a whole OS if you want to use it. If that's not monopoly power I don't know what is. It's a MEDIA PLAYER for Christ's sake!!!! There is no reason it needs the "advanced" code of XP. MS is scamming the public. Nothing new really. |

| You get the codecs for free. The new player uses APIs and technologies only found in XP. Warezers already tried gutting the player from XP and using it on Win2k, and found that they could only use the functionality they had with WMP 7, but no new functionality. It wasn't a scam, and there's no loss in functionality as far as playing Windows Media files goes. |

JeffChapNet - Why start after XP? Why not just skip XP completely and go right to OSX. Don't make idle threats, especially when your complaints aren't valid.
jaredbkt - One of the new features is the SRS enhanced playback. SRS is a component that Microsoft licensed from SRS Labs, and I suspect they would have to pay a royalty for distributing it. This isn't the only technology in there, but they do make the product more compelling and is the reason why Microsoft is not just giving it out for free. As n4cer pointed out, the WM8 codecs are freely available, and you can play WMA files generated with WM8 on any other player. With so many other better media players out there on the market, I don't understand why you want WM8 so bad. |
