According to hundreds of reports from users worldwide, 30GB Zunes are freezing and locking up due to what appears to be a new years date bug.
One poster summarized the issue on Microsoft's support forums, "At exactly 2am CDT (12am PDT), the docked Zune made the "unplugged from USB port" bong-noise and went to the boot-up screen with the 100% loading bar...and froze. At 2:30am CDT, I decided to check the other Zune. Turned it on and...frozen at the 100% loading screen."
It appears as though only 30GB Zunes are currently affected and some reports indicate that only Zunes with the latest firmware are affected, but this hasn't yet been confirmed.
Update 2:11 p.m. PST: Microsoft issued another statement, saying its technical team has isolated the issue: a bug in the internal clock driver related to the way the device handles a leap year. The company says the issue should be resolved over the next 24 hours as the time change moves to January 1, 2009. "We expect the internal clock on the Zune 30GB devices will automatically reset tomorrow (noon, GMT)," Microsoft said. "By tomorrow you should allow the battery to fully run out of power before the unit can restart successfully, then simply ensure that your device is recharged, then turn it back on. If you're a Zune Pass subscriber, you may need to sync your device with your PC to refresh the rights to the subscription content you have downloaded to your device."

What a massive cock up - classic though for a software error. Wonder how the firmware will be fixed as plugging it in now doesn't show the Zune at all. Happened on my old 30gb model, glad I don't use the Zune anymore

My Zune 30 is frozen. What should I do?
Follow these steps:
1. Disconnect your Zune from USB and AC power sources.
2. Because the player is frozen, its battery will drain—this is good. Wait until the battery is empty and the screen goes black. If the battery was fully charged, this might take a couple of hours.
3. Wait until after noon GMT on January 1, 2009 (that's 7 a.m. Eastern or 4 a.m. Pacific time).
4. Connect your Zune to either a USB port on the back or your computer or to AC power using the Zune AC Adapter and let it charge.
Once the battery has sufficient power, the player should start normally. No other action is required—you can go back to using your Zune!

The issue was caused by a component unqiue to the Zune 30 and its associated firmware.
@8, What? I have two men who work with me that were born in India and have now become naturalized U.S. citizens. They are some of the best engineers and developers I have ever seen. They are as close to me as my own sons and loyal beyond any ability to express it here. I hope the software is being developed in India!

Reality check: humans are non perfect therefore they are unable to generate something perfect.
Said that I am a little bit surprised about this bug because I would assume that possible issues related to leap years had been investigare more thoroughly.
Well, better a bug in the Zune software than in the one governing airplanes ILS.

#10: Indian software engineers working in North America are generally great programmers. However, I partially agree with #8 about outsourcing software development, but not just to India. The problem is not lack of competence. It is lack of ongoing face to face communications that often lead to misreading specs with the result that projects too often take longer when outsourced. I have had no luck dealing with companies in India due to time zone differences, and different understandings of mutual goals. Calling someone at 11 PM when I'm tired and he's just getting into the swing of things is not my idea of a practical business arrangement. One of my long time friends is a naturalized citizen from India that returns home a couple of times per year. Even he says that the will not move back there to live as the infrastructure is too obsolete and not changing fast enough.

#12, Those are legitimate concerns, for certain.
I was so long part of global work in government, which involed not only many nations and their people, but also goals that were not always entirely consistent, that I had to learn to see a different perspective - accepting that there would always be "some" gaps, but that projects ended up benefiting from a richness that only that diversity, including the challenges, would produce. Now... I did not arrive at that perspective quickly... and in some cases, had to force myself to seek out the best in some tough dealings, but in retrospect, it's easy to see how unique perspectives can help. Even the challenges and learning to deal with them, have made managing complex projects a lot easier for us.
The other thing that is so cool was to help shape lasting impressions. Hopefully they were good ones.

" ... the 30GB Zune failing bug also affects its twin brother, the Toshiba Gigabeat S. According to them, the culprit is the power management circuit.
The fiend is Freescale's MC13783 PMIC—a chipset used to regulate and control power—which is used in the the Gigabeat S Series. This is the model that Microsoft used as the basis for their Zune.'

You fool. The faulty code is wekk known and has nothing to do with the Freescale chip
year = ORIGINYEAR;
while (days > 365)
{
if (IsLeapYear(year))
{
if (days > 366)
{
days -= 366;
year += 1;
}
}
else
{
days -= 365;
year += 1;
}
