Microsoft revising its attitude toward open source | |

When Microsoft completed its acquisition of San Francisco-based startup Powerset in July, it acquired more than just search-engine technology. In the HBase component of Powerset's product, Microsoft also acquired open-source code that is actively being redistributed back into the Apache Software Foundation's Hadoop project.

| #3 These guys don't use Google - they use Live Search (or whatever Microsoft is calling it this week). The up side is that they get paid for doing so, the down side is that their search results are on par with Altavista. |

I think they were talking about GPL licence. It is not far from truth to call it something like cancer.
My company won't allow any GPL code in our products for that reason precisely - it forces you to open everything once you use any code under GPL. Other open source licences (such as BSD) are much better. |

| #5: Use LGPL code. While you still have to make available any modifications you made to the LGPL-covered stuff (if any), the rest of your code remains closed. |

I know. But I was talking about GPL.
In any case (GPL or LGPL) --- I couldn't care less about those and certainly don't need to spend my time thinking "what-if.." Simply, there's more than enough high-quality code available under less restrictive licences (all OSI approved)... or even in the public domain. |
