I hope they will implement the "Double side" taskbar; so far so good though.
Btw does anybody knows if Media Center still lock completely your desktop? Having a two screens set this is the main reason I have not used it much. |

a couple things: gadgets have always been able to placed anywhere on the dekstop - the marketing people involved in demos suggested otherwise. Libraries seems to be an extension of saved searches - making that function more accessible and in many ways, more visible.
The new taskbar is going to take some getting used to visually - looks kind of blocky to me. The set focus on MCE windows was locked in Vista - a change from XP MCE. I too hope they change this back. We used to make wireless remote workstations - remoting an LCD keyboard and mouse via UWB and leaving MCE on a big screen. Vista made that impossible. |

Libraries reminds me of the "Virtual folders" in the early Vista beta releases; unfortunately they were killed along the road; I hope that, even with a dfferent name, they will be back for good.
I am pretty sure that the UI will change before RTM, we will see. |

#9 Fritz, all folders in user space in Vista are virtual folders - though they are designed not to appear that way.
"Virtual Folders" as you've probably heard them described 'are' in Vista and can be created any time you wish. Just search, save that search and in your user folder under saved searches, you may add to any virtual folder you wish. Practically, it works very well and is a great feature. Say you have some photos you tag as summer vacation 2007. You can collect and save these in the virtual saved search folder without making a copy of the photos - saves time and disc space. It also makes it possible to access things quickly. Finally, 'content' like your photos can be 'in' as many virtual (saved search) folders at the same time and again, without duplicating the content. In Vista, as it will be in Windows 7, all of user space is virtual and always has been and perhaps not at all ironically, with object tagging and virtual folders, MS obviated the need for WinFS by delivering the functionality without the overhead. |

#10: Thanks for the comment Iketchum; yes you are correct in your statement although the "Virtual Folders" I mentioned were working in a different way. While I personaly cannot go further because of the NDA, journalists were allowed to do it so following is the link to a Paul Thurrot article about them:
http://www.winsupersite.com/reviews/winvista_beta1_02.asp As you see while the result is similar, there are some subtle differences, among them the fact the a virtual folder called "Iketchum pictures" would have a new picture tagged with the name "Iketchum" added automatically to it . Do not get me wrong I have nothing against "Search" in Vista, I just not use it a lot because I am quite organized and I know where things are. Now let us see how long will it take to have a "Multitouch", "WIndows 7 ready" Tablet PC available for sale. This post was edited by Fritzly on Wednesday, October 29, 2008 at 13:32. |

#11, That is the one I am waiting on, too, Fritz - big tablet PC - with enough power to make it my primary machine for all but gaming and dev work. I currently use one of our 15.4's which scores a WEI of 5.5 with a recent MXM II upgrade. While plenty powerful, I like ink and the Tablet PC functionality - though I have zero experience with touch.
Yes, they will MESH enable search/virtual folders this go around, which is cool, but part of the deal that was/is so cool about virtualized folders is that only one copy of any one file/object need be stored. I see the benefit of replicating objects and external meta data per the demo and I am confident that "both" iterations will be supported. Also, many do not know it, but W2K3R2 allows for complete virtualization of the named space. This is ideal for SMB's with small branch offices. (where our experience in using it rests) - direct connect with extend SMB over SSL even further - VPN sans the VPN. |
