Will Windows 7 get a new name for its release? | |

Ed Bott: I’m reading more and more about Windows 7 lately as PDC approaches and Microsoft begins revealing more snippets of information about its most secretive product ever. In most of that coverage, I’ve noticed an assumption that Windows 7 is going to be the final name of the product. I’ve been guilty of leaping to that conclusion myself.

What kind of non-story is this? Why would Microsoft keep the name Windows 7? This author has obviously forgotton all the previous versions of Windows (since 95 at least) which was described using their codename until soon before release. Windows Vista was known as Longhorn for years till they announced a formal name soon before it was released. So it stands to reason that Microsoft will announce a proper name at some point next year.

| Steven Sinofsky is running things - it will be Windows 2010 (even if released late in 2009) - though it should be Windows Vista R2 (less they take a giant dump on the heads of partners and users who have moved Vista despite the drubbing each has fairly, or unfairly taken on behalf of MS). |

#6 Because most (majority of?) software companies have stopped using version numbers when marketing their newest version, e.g. Adobe, Symantec, Microsoft etc etc. #10 "R2" isn't a consumer-friendly term - at least not one that you'd print on the side of a box. Maybe they can do a Street Fighter thing with it... "Super Windows Vista II Turbo" I'd bet on them dumping the "Vista" name as quickly as they can with this version of Windows. |

| #6 -- because it isn't Windows 7.0... it's really just 6.1. Sinofsky's "every new version has a new, .0 version number" philosophy from Office just doesn't work over in the Windows side -- 6.1 is a very proper descriptor of "7"'s changes over Vista. |

#10 and #11 They obviously won't be calling it Vista, considering all the previous versions of Windows since 95 have had different names. For example they didn't carry on the XP name, did they? Or the Me name? Microsoft have never reused names for new versions of Windows so "R2" is out. It's 100% guaranteed that they will be calling it something different, just like they always have done.
#all - they won't be calling it after a year, they gave that up since Windows 98SE. Naming it after a particular year is reserved for the server versions of Windows and has been since Windows 2000. |

| And guess what? Microsoft announced it WILL be called Windows 7. That's a turn up for the books. |
