If Microsoft needed a wake up call as to just how big a problem it has on its hands to convince midsized companies to move to Vista, it got it at the Midsize Enterprise Summit on Monday.

| Wow... a WHOLE 340 businesses!! That "study" truly makes a HUGE difference to the MILLIONS upon MILLIONS of businesses in the rest of the world. |

| Not to mention that businesses routinely skip client OSes all the time. In fact, I wonder how many are still on Windows 2000 (and even NT 4)? A lot more than the majority of the 340 businesses polled who said they'd skip Vista. |

| The fact that Windows XP has become so entrenched after such a long period in between releases is another reason for this. It is better to deal with the headaches you know than a whole new set of headaches. So they are slow to change. The larger the company the more this tends to be the case too. I have been dealing with a location of a large multi national hotel chain that didn't make the move to active directory until last year and was still using many Windows 2000 systems. If MS sticks to 3 year cycles for release of OS you are going to see many skipping releases and many different MS OS's in use in businesses. I don't think you will ever see one MS OS with the market share numbers that XP attained. |

| they skip Vista, but they will use Vista because the next OS Windows 7 will have the same Vista core. |

#5, yeah, the sampling is probably flawed.

The good news is that not one of them mentioned switching to Linux.

"A May Gartner survey of midsize CIOs found that 55 percent of midsize organizations had no Vista systems. Forty percent of those polled at the time said they will have no Vista deployed by the end of 2008. Finally, 75 percent of those polled projected they will have 25 percent of their PCs running Vista by the end of 2009. " So, in a scientific survey, 75% of midsize business with be part way into their Vista deployment by the end of next year. | #9: The Gartner survey was quoted from the linked article. None of the polls listed are scientific, just a compiled view of the of the answers provided by those that participated. Considering the 25% and 75% figures, the questions may have had multiple choice answers to choose from, or maybe they sampled 4 people. Who knows? A statistically significant poll would use a sizable sampling of a population that represented the "real world", in this case small businesses, to provide a result that is within a few percentage points of the population being represented. That poll result would be representative of the date that it was taken only and as time goes on it can be expected to be less representative of current thinking. |
