Inside Chrome: The Secret Project to Crush IE and Remake the Web
Time: 23:58 EST/04:58 GMT | News Source: Wired | Posted By: Kenneth van Surksum

Brian Rakowski walks to the whiteboard in a small conference room in Building 41 on Google's Mountain View campus. A lanky, gregarious man in his twenties, Rakowski is the product manager of a top-secret project that's been under way for more than two years. The weekly Monday meeting of managers — or "leads," as Google puts it in its nonhierarchical way — will be one of the last before the upcoming launch. Rakowski writes 12 items on the board with a black dry-erase marker. The first is "State of the Release." It's late August, and the release in question is called Chrome, Google's first Web browser. Since a browser is the linchpin of Web activity — the framework for our searching, reading, buying, banking, Facebooking, chatting, video watching, music appreciation, and porn consumption — this is huge for Google, a step that needed to wait until the company had, essentially, come of age. It is an explicit attempt to accelerate the movement of computing off the desktop and into the cloud — where Google holds advantage. And it's an aggressive move destined to put the company even more squarely in the crosshairs of its rival Microsoft, which long ago crushed the most fabled browser of all, Netscape Navigator.

Hey this is a fast browser, with a couple of nice features (and a lot missing from a customization standpoint), but speed alone does not buy you you into this game - just ask Opera.

"It is an explicit attempt to accelerate the movement of computing off the desktop and into the cloud "

IMO as long as people have a hard drive, they will prefer to have their software on that hard drive.

Google's best application is Picasa - software that lives on the hard drive and accesses the cloud for additional features.

There is all this yak about how Microsoft is scared and worried.... BS! Nonsense!

S+S (order it any way you want- software first, or services first)

The reality is that Google is scared out of their minds....

They should be. Microsoft is best positioned with a complete platform and S+S on their platform is lightyears ahead of Google and picking up speed.

It's great to see them compete, but the lopsided reporting is enough to make one puke.

Chrome works great with Google apps as expected. However, after one day of use I see that it's a bit rough around the edges. When editing a post on ActiveWin some typed characters aren't showing up in the text box when entered. I need to scroll the screen up and down to see what I typed. Chrome is far from polished. It's more like scrap aluminum at this point in time. I am giving it up for now. It's not really a very good beta for general use. I expected more from Google since Gmail and Google Calendar worked so well as "betas". Oh yeah, good luck with crushing IE.

I am going to keep it for now but I have changed the default search engine to LIVE (Just to piss off Google).

I hope the trend is to accelerate the movement of computing off the desktop and into the cloud. I have a hard drive, but I would much prefer working in the cloud. I would much rather have just a monitor with a keyboard and mouse, with a ethernet port in the back taking me to my Google services in my Chrome OS, available anywhere, anytime.

Awin isn't working properly for me typing messages either, but that isn't because of Chrome, it's because AWIN is dated and isn't standards compliant.

Why?

#7 By 28801 (65.90.202.10) at 9/3/2008 1:45:45 PM
I have my stuff available anytime, anywhere through Mesh. And my performance on my desktop is better than your "cloud" experience and I have greater control over what software I can use.

I can capture and edit home movies. I can scan old photos. I can make Phone calls from my computer. I can have Video chat. I can hook other devices up to my computer so long as there is a driver. I can do a myriad of things you can't on a dumb terminal.

I guess, If all you want to do is manage your email and your Google docs then the cloud is for you.

I prefer the best of both worlds!

It doesn't make sense to introduce another browser to the market. The new browser allows users to do what they can already do and doesn't change anything. I like Microsoft's approach of Mesh, Silverlight, and software + services - this is where the industry is going, and this enables new and unique capabilities that cannot be given through a new browser application. Good luck Google with your new browser - but I don't see it making them any new money. I only see it taking away Firefox users.

I like having my Google Docs, Google Spreadsheets, Google Presentations, Google Gmail, Google Picasa, and Google Video all synced, always backed up, and always updated without me having to constantly install or worry about adding PC's to my Live Mesh.

I guess if all I want to do is documents, spreadsheets, presentations, emails, photo storage and editing, video storage, browse the internet, pay bills, balance my checking account and more, using Google. So yeah, that is all I need to do right now with what they have available, and the services are not slow for me, unlike what you stated. I can call from Google Chat as well, which will be making it's way to web based as well.

I have the best of both worlds. Once they add video editing to Google, I will be all set. Give me an empty box with a ethernet port. No need for windows, no need for an HDD. Give me an annual subscription to all the google services in one, and it's available to me on any computer, any where, any time, without me having to worry about whether or not an application is installed on the computer I am at to open my files, it just doesn't get any slicker than that.

But what about if you are on a plane or in a location that is not connected?

Personally I also have other issues because I like to keep my documents, pictures and everything else under my control without any "entity" drilling in my data or. even worse, claim rights about it but again, this could be a matter of personal preferences.

I kinda see the "cloud" differently. I think the idea will gain traction mainly in vertical markets. That is to say for instance, numerous attorneys/physicians using a web based application to run their offices and do their billing.

This would obviate the need for in-house IT. No up front software or expensive hardware costs (read servers and server software) and very simple shared services in multiple locations. A huge savings. (I'll repeat it again - A huge cost savings!)

Look I'm not a tech guy, but word processing and even photo editing on the "cloud" is just plain dumb. Get a word processor or photo editor from MS or even free from open source. Its fast basically fool proof and very easy to administer and even to share.

I envision the future office with multiple very simply networked PCs that basically do simple stuff while off loading the expensive stuff to the "cloud".

BTW - It probably won't matter one hoot which effin' browser you use.

"But what about if you are on a plane or in a location that is not connected?"

Well, they do have Google Gears for offline, though I anticipate an always on world...from planes, trains and automobiles.

For me, I believe the days of installing physical media should be a thing of the past. Again, this is just my personal preference is all. By no means am I saying it is better than what we have today, nor am I saying it is better than services like Live Mesh or MobileMe. It's better for ME at this time, and I hope to see more of it in the future.

Sorry - Am I missing something? I would love to "DEMO" your outstanding application but I would require an ID and Password. So until then, thanks for the login screen!

#17: Perhaps the vast, world-wide anti-Vista media conspiracy is blocking it from you? Or maybe you just have to search the rich Windows ecosystem for a login. As a last resort, contact your local MS Partner and he'll fix you up, or at least he'll try to convince you that this isn't a problem and not being able to login is in your best interests.

Relax. I kid, I kid!
