One area opposite the iPhone 2.0 update not getting a lot of coverage is the "Not so much Exchange for the rest of us" under MobileMe.
Specifically, "push" doesn't push at all and a scheduled sync is used instead - so users who do not actually have an Exchane and or Hosted Exchange services with Outlook Anywhere/ActiveSync, are out of luck for now.
Users not supported by an Exchange and true ActiveSync would have to poll so frequently that both battery life and the user experience were burned - so "Exchange for the rest of Us" is limited to syncing and does not feature direct-push.
When or if/how this will be resolved has not been revealed. With low-cost hosted Exchange for all on the near horizon, it seems that if you want Exchange and direct-push, the way to go is with Exchange itself, and not push-less Gmail, etc... a'course there are a great many other reasons to use Exchange beyond support for mobile devices, but it is a an important one on its own.
