Why do five dictionary words require a 60MB Windows update? | |

Yesterday was July 2008's Patch Tuesday, the day Microsoft released the monthly security patches for vulnerabilities in its software via Windows Update and various other channels. The software giant also sneaked in a nonsecurity update that is worth noting simply because it's quite a bizarre one. | ||

| Perhaps the dictionary is somehow structured so that a binary diff could not be done on it. That's the only reason I can think of as to why they would ship the entire dictionary again as the fix. Seems to me that the easier fix is to type those 5 words out and then manually add them to the dictionary when they are flagged as misspelled. |

| Someday we may learn what undocumented changes were made along with adding five words. Hopefully, one change being made is that in the future single words may be added without downloading 60+ MB. |

MS is simply full of shit. Obviously theyre sneaking other stuff in there. Why does the dictionary need to be updated by them anyway? Like has been mentioned before, if a user comes across a word that gets flagged, they should be able to simply add it to the dictionary which is probably not much more than a list of words. They just want control. Its little things like this that give them a skeleton key to do their unsolicited housekeeping and probably snooping.
Theyre just a fishy business. Remember those few, usually completely empty, folders in XP that you just couldnt delete with out them spontaneously regenerating themselves? Yet you could delete all kinds of other core files that would actually kill windows. But those few innocuous directories just had to be there at all costs. Fishy. |
