Why is this needed on an enterprise portal? My company uses WebSphere which doesn't play well with AD so users have to type a login and password. Beyong that its is a sack of poo. I have installed WSS 2.0 on a department server and all I hear is "Hey, can we use this for our department?" This post was edited by rxcall on Monday, July 07, 2008 at 18:10. |

#1, True enough. SP has been wildly popular since STS1.
WSSV3 is much more refined and extremely flexible. Try leveraging the SSRS web part and use RS to look at business data in real-time - the people in those departments will go nuts over it and your stock will rocket. Note however, that WSSV3 AD integration is extremely tight - which has both great points and a bad side, or two. Reporting Services is very easy to develop for and excellent, low-cost third party add-ons are available from Dundas, etc... that allow devs to add very compelling visual business information products. Using the same work, you can simultaneously drop the reports you build into .NET apps that face customers outside your WSS based Intranet/Extranet. The article is bunk - it is extremely easy to face WSS/SPS parts to other apps and networks - all it takes is a little imagination and a tiny bit of work and you'll be off and running in about any direction you care to take. It's good stuff! |

These guys just kill me....
I split this from #2, as I wanted to keep my messages/meaning separate... I have to ask... just how useful in the context of the enterprise, are all the largely consumer facing Web 2.0 apps? There's this idea that the apps have to be so limited and so weak that they are therefore very easy to use - stupid easy.... and just as limited in ways most Web 2.0 sites are. WSS/SPS and the other servers are not hard... they are not stupid easy either and to make good use of them, they take some "WORK" - well... no kidding... as if anything that has value doesn't take some effort?!? Look, for any decent admin that can read, these servers are a breeze and they can begin delivering great value on day one. With a bit more effort and planning, they can be used in so many great ways and truly make "Enterprise 2.0" a reality. Nearly all of our customers are using these technologies opposite customer, vendor and partner facing ways - call it social if you want... but we simply call it getting things done for less and joined to relevant information. Oh, and for the clowns that think MS Office stops at the desktop...and any online, or OSS productivity suite is good enough... look around the enterprise a bit... you'll find all kinds of servers like this running... doing that whole web 2.0 and cloud stuff that a growing pile of tards is just now talking about seriously.. the difference is that all this is in easy reach of SMB's too and has been out there a very ling time. |

#3: Funny thing is, this guy doesn't offer any alternatives. A comparison to a product that
does some of these things better than SharePoint would have been more useful. I seriously doubt he can name a competing enterprise product that doesn't have similar issues (if not worse). Hell, my company has been implementing WebSphere for 6 years and still no single sign on. They want to use some Tivoli plug-in on my IIS servers that will be able to handle Wepsphere authentication. My users don't have to log in - Windows Authentication just works in my environment. |

#4, Yep.... it's just nutty out there... The main thing is that these are platform servers and by design, open to and intended to be developed for and on - so they do end up being exactly what the supported enterprise requires. The fact that they are so open to so many types of development is not even discussed and that is simply wrong-headed.
I could have written a great deal on this subject and probably should share more - I mean... I get the point that "Enterprise 2.0" has it place, but DANG.... that should not be in any way confused with the "consumerization" of the Enterprise. That frankly has been going on for ten years - especially in small and medium sized businesses where a great many people have been mixing roles for a long time. Heck, we've specialized in building exactly that sort of environment for our customers - not because we saw any kind of trend mind you, but because customers have always had that need. Facing internal information in an organized way to a client's customers is not new either, and the servers MS has had out there have been well suited to allow one to build such solutions. |
