Xbox Co-Creator Resigns to Start New Venture | |

The co-creator of Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox video game console has resigned days after the software giant conceded the unit was struggling internationally and would miss its initial sales targets, Microsoft said on Monday. Seamus Blackley, a physicist by training who also worked in Hollywood before joining Microsoft, plans to start some sort of new venture, the details of which he will begin discussing in the next few weeks, according to his spokeswoman, Susan Lusty. Lusty declined to discuss Blackley's plans, and, without elaborating, a Microsoft spokesman only said the former Xbox executive was leaving to "pursue other opportunities." | ||

Good for him. Big minds like that don't stay in one place for very long. He made the Xbox, it was finished, and now it's off to make something else.
Why is it that the press must make everything that happens to MS (good, bad, irrelevant) seem like it's the end of the world for them? |

The Red Herring story from a couple of weeks ago contains the most likely answer to where he's going...
"For Mr. Blackley, the answer is to start something new that can fire his imagination the same way the Xbox did. When he joined Microsoft, he had wanted to return to his original mission of making games that would be recognized as artistic endeavors. He will inevitably get back to that work, whether he's working for Microsoft or not. His old buddy Mr. Bachus has since started a game production company (in stealth mode) that works with developers and offloads the risk of development from publishers. The odds are good the two men will find a way to work together again. Mr. Blackley has done a game console, but he is still haunted by his own failure to make an artistic game." When they tossed Bachus, Seamus almost left then (this is just after the first E3 appearance of the XBox) but stayed on as the lead evangelist/spokesperson for the XBox. I bet he will be working with Bachus again. Without his pitch skills and sway with developers, this could effect XBox for the negative in terms of developer acceptance. |

The real story here, that the mainstream media is completely missing, is that all consoles are doing poorly and are having both supply and demand problems. Remember the PS2 fiasco when they cut their shipping unit number in half, and then in half again right before the launch?
MS did the same thing. And they even used stock components (no fab required)! The real story is: Consoles are a dying breed. The games are all the same, there are no killer games anymore, and they don't justify their own cost. The future of Consoles is either Death, or PC integration and/or home automation. Microsoft is the only company I've heard of that plans on turning their console into more than just a gaming machine. This is unusual since many, many people have talked about turning their consoles into everything but the kitchen sink. Remember the old Bally machines (Pong)? They promised one day to do your taxes, keep your lights on and off while you're on vacation and just about everything else. It never came true unfortunately, but they had the vision. |

cnet is reporting that Nintendo is cutting the price of the Gamecube by 25% in Europe.
