Microsoft: Safari Flaw a Danger to Windows Users | |

Microsoft warned on Friday that Apple's Safari Web browser for Windows exposes PCs to a security hole that permits potentially malicious files to be downloaded to a user's machine and run without prompting the user. Microsoft's advisory comes two weeks after security researcher Nitesh Dhanjani warned both Redmond and Cupertino that Safari introduces a vulnerability in Windows and OS X machines, which allows any rogue Web site to "carpet bomb" the user's Desktop (Windows), or Downloads directory (Apple), with unwanted files (Safari is not installed by default on Windows machines). | ||

apple quality
and this wasnt even fixed in this weekend's eighteen dozen bug apple patch. yeah yeah, i made up that number... cause apple doesn't deal in reality and isn't held to scrutiny well enough to force the disclosure. |

#5: Really? Which people are those again? The ones who live in your house?
If I wish to be made more secure from a web browser that allows drive-by downloads, I don't need Vista. I need Firefox. Honestly, if I had a problem with my car's locks letting crooks in, I would change the lock. I would not change the entire car for one from the same manufacturer and hope that their new locks are better. At any rate, my only comment on this post was the strange situation of having a microbot complain about about drive-by downloads in Safari when IE has been doing the same for many, many years. |

#6, You're kidding, right...? c'mon... tell me, you are, aren't you? You need FF?
Tell me one drive-by anything that will install on a Vista box using IE 7 that does not run smash-face into one of many layers a user would have to approve? Name one? I wouldn't run FF if I were paid to use it. If you can do that, name one bit of zero-day mal-ware that can get by ASLR in Vista x64 - if by chance it makes it out of the restricted space assigned in protected mode? |

#8: Would you please stop invoking Vista as the panacea? 85+% of Windows users are not using Vista, so constantly telling me how Vista would do this or that is pointless in the general sense. |

Here's the difference... none of those "alternatives is there yet, and guess what... they are not likely to be any time soon..." BUT, a much more secure option is available for Windows users right now and it has been for a good long while now. It's called Vista and by the way... x64 is ready for the vast majority of users. You cannot "wish" that away, and when you consider what is available "in the cloud" (Windows Live Photo Gallery, Live Writer, MESH, Live Photo Backup, etc...), you have to start to ask yourself who has all the pieces...? Software... and Services... hint it isn't Apple, or Google, or FOSS/OSS, it's Microsoft. Now, understand that every bit of that is exposed to secure web services and reflect on what it means for developers, ISV's and enterprises.... I mean.... as long as we're talking about relevance... as you seem to suggest. |
