Microsoft Patents Proactive Virus Protection | |

Microsoft has just snared a U.S. patent for proactive virus protection, which is how security software helps secure your PC when it encounters shape-shifting malware not already in its antivirus definition file. What I want to know is, what does this mean for all the other vendors -- like McAfee, Symantec, Kaspersky, and Trend Micro -- that have been selling proactive protection software for years? Do they now have to pay Microsoft protection; I mean, royalties? Here's the quick low-down on the new Microsoft patent. Issued on May 20, patent number 7,376,970 is entitled "System and method for proactive computer virus protection." The inventor is Adrian Marinescu, who was at one point (maybe he still is) a lead developer on the Windows kernel team, heavily involved in the heap manager. He previously worked on Windows NT's object manager, which is a key software traffic-cop managing the interaction among all the executive kernel subsystems. All this is by way of saying that Mr. Marinescu clearly knows his operating-system internals. | ||

Prior art by every AV vendor in town will be the end of that patent.

Who knows... it'll be interesting to see what happens especially as no other AV company has ever requested a patent for their AV 'design'.
Plus Marinescu's patent refers to the AV scanning happening "within" the OS code itself and not installed on top of the OS. |

I'm not too entirely sure.. I'm sure they'll try to spin in around some way and get "licenses" for it..
And another thing, if this is built into the OS, then a virus scanner trying to run on top of the OS probably won't work. I'm sure Windows 7 will have this built-in scanner feature and you won't be able to use your McAfee, NOD32, Norton, etc. |

Most of those big AV guys don't do Proactive Virus Protection. There only offer protection against known virus in the definition files. That's why they need update the definition files couple times a week.
Doing proactive virus protection successfully does require deep OS knowledge to cut down the false alarm rates. One can say Vista's UAC is a form of Proactive Virus Protection. |
