Gov't mulls Microsoft, others for ID | |

The U.S government is considering using online ID systems from Microsoft, Entrust, RSA, and VeriSign among others to track the identity of visitors to a dozen new federal Web sites launching later this year, a federal official said Friday. Mark Forman, who oversees the federal government's $45 billion IT budget, said he is talking to the companies about how their online identification technologies might give agencies a standard way to let the general public access private information on the Web. One of the sites, for example, will allow citizens to check social security (news - web sites) benefits online. Forman is associate director of information technology at the Office of Management and Budget. | ||

There are millions (last time I checked) people using Passport and storing all sorts of critical information, yet I've not heard of a single hack.
Why do you guys assume that Passport will be bad? |

It is a far far better thing to use a crappy product from AOL, than to be subjected to using a quality product from Microsoft.

daz, it isn't that they assume Passport is bad. Its just cooler to hate the guy at the top of the hill. People have more fun rooting for the underdog. Its just an unfortunate part of our brains that hasn't evolved. This post was edited by mooresa56 on Monday, April 22, 2002 at 10:22. |

#11 - AOL announced their system shortly after Microsoft announced Passport. This was followed up a few months later by Sun announcing Liberty Alliance.
RANT - So your contention is that I should have the freedom to view your personal information on government web sites? I wonder what Ben Franklin would have to say to your putting no value on privacy. Doesn't privacy go hand in hand with freedom? |

RANT - You are arguing against implementing security on government websites. Or didn't you realize that? Maybe you should go read the article.

RANT - No need to imply anything... Several government websites have been taken down in recent years because of lack of appropriate security. The most publicized case was the court order that took down the entire Department of Interior because of the Indian Affairs website fiasco.
As I said, your rant is uninformed, as usual. |
