Product Key not accepted after Integrating SP3 media | |

Scott McArthur: This blog entry covers a issue that some customers have encountered with the release of SP3 for Windows XP. The service pack supports the use of the /integrate command to integrate(or also called slipstream) SP3 into a Windows XP flat. It is supported to run the command with the following media Windows XP Professional RTM Windows XP Professional SP1 Windows XP Professional SP2 The problem arises if the /integrate command is run under Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008. The /integrate process will not report any error and appear to work but if you try to install from the media your product key may not be accepted. Luckily the fix is easy. sillyness, this bug was reported in beta 2 of sp3 and made it throught to RTM, I'll tell ya, quality control better get it together over there is redmond, this vista sp1 and xp sp3 give and yank, with the "dynamics" bug and all is really getting out of hand. Now AMD drivers cause endless reboots too...did they really not test on AMD run computers...?
and tell me again why we had a launch party for Windows Server/SQL/and Visual Studio 2008 when only vs08 was ready? pretty soon iam expecting an announcement of Windows 7/IE 8 launch party....sorry we didn't make the deadline...we will have it ready sometime in 2009/10. |

| Yes agree with SidX, there's too much of low-quality stuff coming out of Redmond these days..XPSP3 also broke some IE7, XPMCE, Tablet PC and Office XP KBs including some security ones which were installable on XPSP2..since they weren't OS components, they didn't include it but the SP2 version couldn't install too giving higher service pack version error messages...as of today on slipstreamed SP3 machines upgraded to IE7, the VGX.dll vulnerability is unpatched until MS issues an update. They didn't service MCE, heck didn't even state in the release notes not to try to slipstream SP3 into MCE 2005 (which results in a messy half-damaged state), SP3 has serious issues with Internet Connection Sharing yet MS is not publishing a fix, they'v simply published an "issue" article, and of course the infamous continual restarting issue with AMD processors. They broke the tradition of service packs being fully and truly cumulative....SP3 won't install on Gold RTM and the SP3 forum is testimony to the hundreds of issues users are having (http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowForum.aspx?ForumID=2010&SiteID=17)....all these show some serious lack of quality control. |

another perspective... 700,000,000+ install base. Millions of supported devices. Countless programs, and yes of course, several hundred issues... out of how many?
Not making excuses, but looking at it from another perspective. So many combinations... it is quite easy to expect that a percentage of them will be bad. Another thing... are serious admins really building their images on anything other than the server based platforms that they are intended to be deployed from? Really? WDD is pretty clear about how to set up the servers and technicians station to support such work - there is a step by step, color crayon easy guide available... |

lketchum, consider this, maybe not all "serious" admins have the luxury of supporting one building with a broadband network throughout the site, maybe some "serious" admins have networks that stretch into rural regions, where the only thing that is broadband is the gravel road that gets us to the site. Not all of us have 10/100/1000 network connections to punch down our updates on. Don't even get me started on mobile computers that rarely dock.. Think outside your corporate block building at take a look at the real world.
And fair enough about so many combonations, however, same could be said for any gold release OS. If you bought Vista sp0 and put it on your AMD powered system and went into endless reboots...could you have waited for SP1 to fix over a year later? Same goes here, they are sending out OEM discs with SP3 fully integrated, what good is it for AMD powered computer? sorry to all...i got caught feeding the troll This post was edited by SidX on Friday, May 16, 2008 at 14:18. |

#7 Wow! If you only knew....
Sid, my company specializes in serving the very companies / situations you speak of. While our centers are purpose built and well equipped, many of our customers of small businesses with little budget and under-powered/served infrastructures. We waive out up-front costs for these companies, invest in them and then charge one flat fee that is small to help them grow. We install a mix of solid local infrastructure, and great hosted services and then manage them end to end for the customer. A great many of our clients are rural, though as you suggest, some are in cities. To fuel this we do specialized work for very large customers and many governments. In simple terms, we know the "real world" as you call it, quite well and we do try and make it a better one. |
