Microsoft says 140M Vista licenses sold | |

Microsoft Corp. said Thursday that it has sold 140 million licenses of Windows Vista. Colleen Healy, general manager of investor relations, made the statement during a conference call with Wall Street analysts after Microsoft posted its third-quarter earnings. The company pointed to strong PC sales for helping the much-maligned operating system achieve that number. | ||

| One thing is a little confusing here... whether people buy Vista or XP, Microsoft still collects. Even if 0% of people chose Vista on a new PC, that means they're still choosing Windows (aside from the minimal number that choose Linux). |

I would imagine that the total in sales is worldwide and not just USA, but I get where your going with that % figure and its impressive concidering that VL sales are not taken into account. That sales figure is likely bumped up due to the massive upturn in PC buying ( especially laptops ) in the past year or so, all now generally coming with Vista pre-installed. |

Not really useful data.
How many are licenses allocated to corporations, but not in use. How many are technet/msdn licenses (10 per account) not actually in use. How many are sitting on store shelves, not actually in use. These are 'sold' licenses, but not necessarily in use. TL |

Netapplications has Vista at 14% end of March.
