Windows Embedded road map may bypass Vista | |

The planned successor to the embedded version of Windows XP, due from Microsoft Corp. two years from now, may bypass Windows Vista and instead be based on the oft-maligned operating system's own successor, which is code-named Windows 7.

| Again those fools are writing that Windows 7 will have MinWin as the kernel. If they chose MinWin, 99% of the OS functionality would be lost, heck MinWin doesn't even have a presentation stack. How can anyone who doesn't understand a thing about such things write so decidedly on it? |

"The planned successor to the embedded version of Windows XP, due from Microsoft Corp. two years from now..." That would put it is the same time frame that reports have the next version of Windows being available (Windows 7). Why wouldn't MS base it on the latest OS? "To date, we are certainly working with Vista," Bukshteyn said. But, he added, "if there is an opportunity to get newer technologies in faster, and the customers want it, we may skip Vista." So you see, Latch, MS is working on "embedded technologies" based on Vista. |

#1 -- MinWin is a subset of the operating system, not the entire thing. Win7 is already built on top of MinWin. It's quite like how most Linux distributions are layered neatly on top of the Linux kernel itself.
As a general note, there was no embedded version of Windows 2000 either; they skipped from NT 4 Embedded to XP Embedded. I don't see anything unusual or revealing about skipping Vista. I must say though, that the "component-based" nature of Vista is quite well suited for Embedded -- take a look through the manifest files in the WinSXS folder on Vista, and you can see that the component structure is quite similar (though more granular) to how XP Embedded's platform builder is structured. |

I really think the world's media should be complaining about why Microsoft is not embedding Windows Server 2008!!!! the shock and horror of it all!!!

I think MS actually will embed WS2008, i'm still expecting the Hyper-V embedded version. |
