I really think we need to "get over" the Ultimate Extra's issue myself... yep I paid the extra and got had like others. I personally feel it was the changing of the guard with Mr SS coming in to run Windows division that caused the destruction of the extras group :)
No gadgets don't make Microsoft any money, they were never intended to. Does Google's gadgets or Yahoo's widget's make them any money? not that I know of but again, I doubt they were ever intended to.
They are a lot of very "cool and funky" heck, even useful "gadgets" available - from all three "gadget platforms".
Silverlight was never designed to replace gadgets at all. Its nothing to do with gadgets... but it is possible to use it for them as well. Its like WPF... as "base structure" upon which your application (or at least code) can use.
