Windows Mobile 6.1 to be released on 1 April | |

Pocket-lint has learnt from sources close to the matter that Microsoft will announce the much-rumoured refresh to its mobile phone operating system, Windows Mobile, on 1 April 2008. An improvement over Windows Mobile 6 released in February 2007 the new version, unsurprisingly named 6.1, will be a stop-gap measure to keep both consumers and industry happy until the launch of Windows Mobile 7. Leaked screenshots of 6.1 have already done the rounds in the blogosphere, and show the system has been simplified with the screens displaying less mess than the Vista-inspired version 6. A new look with new fonts, new homescreen and new features such as a task manager and copying and pasting in Internet Explorer all bode well for users of Microsoft's OS for handhelds. | ||

Funny how that particular day of the year is used to announce things... are they really seeking for jokes about what they have to announce?
If I was to announce I just win 20 millions that day, I guess I would wait the 2nd to do it. Same if I had to announce I want to divorce. Maybe not if I want to say bye bye boss though... :-) |

I couldn't agree more about the April 1st announcement date! Why not just March 31st?
Anyways... I've been running WM6.1 for awhile now and theres only a few enhancements over 6.0. Basically its a code refresh to support the System Manager for Windows Mobiles. Oh there is an IE "zoom" feature - shows the whole page or certain percentages of the "true" web page. I like the articles comment saying "Vista-inspired version 6" ?? what the?! since when was that ever announced or even infered by MS? |

The biggest issue is: released to whom? HTC, other manifacturers and Carriers or to customers via Windows Update?
My guess is the former; if so and in order to obtain it I would have to buy a new handset I will skip it. I will probably get an iPhone in June with Exchange support, PocketInformant add-on etc. This post was edited by Fritzly on Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at 06:37. |

#3 I'm kinda with you on the "to whom" gig. I had to wait for a long time for my BlackJack (first gen) to have an upgrade option. I can only imagine getting 6.1 will be a comparable wait.
Though Latch may need to change is undies after I say this, I'm currently considering an iPhone. If Mobile7 doesn't have some serious public showing by the end of the year I may have to abandon my hopes of getting it for an iPhone. Only problem is I avoid iTunes & Quicktime on my computers like the plague. |

#4 - Although I agree with the comment of "to whom" but thats the downside of having multiple hardware players in the WM OS space. Apple can control everything on the iPhone - just look at the lack of control they're giving up with the SDK!
