Quite is a modest word to express how late Microsoft is with Windows Mobile, I would say amazingly late or too late and maybe exaggeratedly late This post was edited by daniel_rh on Monday, March 17, 2008 at 09:12. |

Microsoft's real problem with Windows Mobile is they were way to early into the game. Seriously they are on Version 6 and Data for Cell phones has only been a viable option for a large number of people for a couple years.
The Windows Mobile has been the bastard stepchild of softare in MS for many many years. Now with the iPhone's popularity and the insane decrease in "unlimited data" prices from the phone carriers they can finally start making the advancements they want. Oh and before someone gets into MS about not having flash or pdf... hows about you call Adobe eh? WM5 & 6 both have PDF Viewers. But last I checked MS isn't allowed to make PDF's from their software and they don't exactly own the IP to make a flash player for WM. |

"Microsoft has fired warning shot to Apple that it has a long way to go before being able to complete with the company in the mobile phone space. At the company's press conference at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, Microsoft announced its sales figures of Windows Mobile devices in the last 6 months. The number? 14.3 million units worldwide from makers such as Samsung, LG, and HTC. The number, as the spokesperson for Microsoft acknowledged was "ahead of RIM and of course Apple's iPhone". Apple's iPhone has, according to Apple, sold 4 million handsets in the same time although the company has refused to break out sales in the UK. Devices helping the company reach this figure, which Microsoft say will reach 20 million by June, include the HTC Touch and the Samsung BlackJack. Both handsets join Microsoft's self titled "Platinum club" which is awarded to products that have sold over 1 million units. In fact the HTC Touch, Microsoft says, has sold over 2 million units around the world. Nokia has revealed today that it has shifted 7 million Nokia N95s. " |

#3 - You're exactly right! MS was extremely early to the market with an OS that worked better and provided more than other phone OS at the time. I can guess where MS are going with these licensing deals. We've had PDF readers and Flash (v7) players (including Adobe's official one) on WM for some time now but by licensing it, they can include it directly into WM7.
#4 - These figures really do put the iPhone's sales into perspective (or is that shame?) don't they (haha! points at Apple) Yes, the Apple Fanboi's will say but its outselling everything else... the fact of the matter is, its not. One single "HTC Touch" phone (and not a very good WM phone imho!) has sold nearly as many units as the iPhone. Thats a poor situation for the iPhone if you ask me! Considering that HTC have about 10 different WM units, Sony will be selling the X1 soon, add in the Samsung products as well... Microsoft is still the clear winner "against" Apple. Of course, Nokia puts everyone else to shame with actual units sold :-) I see the N95's everywhere in Australia, China and Europe!! (and they are a great phone!) |
