Vista Ultimate team releases new discounts, but no new freebies (yet) | |

After a week on the road, I’m catching up on a few interesting news items I missed this past week. One of them involves Microsoft’s Vista Ultimate. Microsoft has caught hell — as it deserved to — for failing to deliver in a timely manner the Ultimate Extras it promised purchasers of its high-end Vista Ultimate Extra SKU. Last week, the company launched a new Web site, UltimatePC.com, promising to deliver new “Ultimate Exclusives.” Exclusives and Extras are not the same thing. Exclusives “provide Windows Vista Ultimate customers with unique products and services at special discounts.” Exclusives are not meant to replace the Extras; they supposedly will complement them. Ultimate Extras — which include everything from a Texas Hold ‘Em game, to BitLocker Online Key Storage — are freebies positioned as thank-you gifts for Ultimate users for choosing Microsoft’s priciest SKU. | ||

I am not trying to let MS off the hook on this one because they have done a piss poor job with ultimate extras. But who spends 100 more for something and not know what they are going to get. I mean I bought a copy of ultimate when I got my laptop and I got it because I wanted all the features that I knew ultimate would give me. In any other situation would you hand over 100 dollars and not know what you are going to get for your money? |

Yeah, I bought 1 copy of Ultimate because I have a domain network at home, and wanted the additional Media Center features on my main PC. For the others, I went with Business. I don't know why folks paid extra for what everyone pretty much guessed early on would be some crappy games and fancy wallpaper. |

| I got Ultimate because of Shadow copy but I also wanted Media Center. Now, we have http://www.shadowexplorer.com/ which'll eventually give Shadow copy functionality to home users. I'll be careful not to buy Windows 7 Ultimate. |

Well, sometimes yas takes the word of a Major Software Manufacturer that they will provide what they promise, and sometimes you get lied to. In this case we got lied to. I'm not much for class actions, but we deserve our $100 back. TL |

#7 It's not like Ultimate Extras are the only thing that you have in Vista Ultimate versus other versions. I personally haven't even purchased Ultimate because of those Extras.
Having said that, they really failed to deliver more of those. |

Yeah this is what I don't get. You should buy a product for the features it has not for something that it may have. They didn't even say what these supposed features would be. How can you decide to spend more money on features when you don't know what they will be? I bought Ultimate because i wanted Media Centre and domain capability along with a few other things. There are plenty of things that separate Ultimate from the other versions the least of which will be fancy extras I guessed from the beginning that most of the extras would be fluff and that's exactly what it has turned out to be. |

Every power user and enthusiast here benefits from Ultimate in at least one way that I've only heard one person speak about: Secure Startup (formerly known as Cornerstone).

Tech Larry and others are right about how badly the value of Vista Ultimate has been communicated in the market. Even among professionals. Just as with UAC, there has been so little by way of good material that is tailored for consumers. That may be the problem. Microsoft does not communicate well with consumers at all. Yet the company is very good at communicating with businesses, enterprise customers and some partners. Microsoft really can't support consumers at all without having first succeeded with enterprise customers. Enterprise customers subsidize the consumer market for Microsoft software. Microsoft software works, because it can be managed consistently. That is the focus and for any competitor to come close to what Microsoft can do, they will have to address that. Ultimate and Enterprise versions of Vista have the client side features necessary for enterprise customers (the business version does not have them all). The new Ultimate site represents a freer Ultimate team in one limited context and it also shows how that team is trying to communicate better with the consumer side of things. I think the part of the consumer market they are trying to reach is too small, but I think they are off to a better start. We'll see where they are able to take this. |
