benchmarking?
I'm using SP1 RTM and sometimes deleting a .exe file "even one that's 5MB" can take up to 20sec. I see no real world improvement here. This post was edited by donpacman on Wednesday, March 05, 2008 at 02:28. |

| Well using the full Vista SP1 integrated install and it certainly isn't any faster at anything in my view other than deleting and copying files - the install was faster as long as I didn't have anything other than 2GB of ram installed in my Quad system. I'm surprised that people think it is faster - i'll run some proper tests but nothing I have seen so far shows any other speed differences. |

#2 To be fair, if you look at the top chart you'll see that there is basically no difference between RTM + Patches and SP1. The HDD chart appears to be identical which I'm assuming takes into account Vista's appalling performance within Explorer when you're trying to basically do anything with files. The 86% comes in only 1 particular area, shown on the bottom graph, Vista-to-XP file copy performance. Whoopty-doo!
Of course we need to try and get users excited about Vista and the way to do that is to tout SP1 as being the magical fix for all those RTM issues you've heard about and experienced for yourself. You do that by quoting the largest performance increase... not the -2 to 5% (or whatever it happens to be) performance difference across the board. |

Chris: I don't see customers being excited about Vista being faster in any areas. The ones I deal with seem to accept UAC now that it isn't quite as "stupid" as it was, having you click four times when one click should have done the job. That alone made Vista an easy sell for me as I personally disliked the illogical muliple clicks.

| #2: In what other areas do you think it under-performs? I mean, ones over which Microsoft has control; gaming might be one to discuss, but with the latest few driver versions it seems the margin XP had over Vista has largely disappeared. |
