In 1975, a young software whiz named Bill Gates penned a famous letter to computer enthusiasts arguing for the then-controversial notion that software should be paid for.Having used that idea to turn Microsoft Corp into the biggest software company in the world, Gates is now saying the same thing about the Internet: If you want it, you'll have to pay for it. Last month, the Microsoft chairman unveiled HailStorm, the company's biggest step towards turning services like instant messaging and online calendars into a profitable business. ``We are already starting to see the increase in services being made that people are being expected to pay for. That's a trend that's only going to continue,'' said David Smith, an analyst with Gartner Group, a technology consultancy. | ||

Well, my answer to the "nothing was ever free" is network Television. I think what has to happen is that large sites must conglomerate to form huge mega-sites with everything you'll ever need and then throw all sorts of gimmicks to get you to stay at their site. I think MS is going about it wrong, and I think they'll figure it out in about 2 years. They need to offer tons of services that keep people at their sites and have some way of really, really good advertising spots so that sponsors must pay more, but get more bang for their buck. I truly believe that the Internet can be as profitable as Television if they could get users to stay longer at their sites and see more advertisements. Forcing them to pay $10 here, $10 just isn't going to work. The only way a pay site could work is if several for-pay sites got together and offered a combined $15/mo deal or something. The nickel-and-diming approach simply won't work. |
