Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is an update to Windows Vista that addresses feedback from our customers. In addition to previously released updates, SP1 contains changes focused on addressing specific reliability and performance issues, supporting new types of hardware, and adding support for several emerging standards. Windows Vista SP1 also addresses some management, deployment, and support challenges.
On February 4, 2008 Windows Vista Service Pack 1 was released to manufacturing. MSDN subscribers can now access Windows Vista SP1 via the subscriber download area. TechNet Plus subscribers can now access Windows Vista SP1 in the Top Subscribers Download section on the subscriptions home page. Windows Vista SP1 will be available to the public in mid-March via Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center.

Just installed it on a couple machines here. Haven't tried any file copying yet (though if it's anything like W2k8, it will be awesome), but I have to report on one huge benefit I'm already seeing--the new compression algorithms for RDP. I'm testing an RTM RDP window next to an SP1 RDP window with the same scanned PDF file, and the performance difference is incredible. In Vista RTM (and XP, for that matter), using the mouse wheel for an image-based PDF is somewhat painful over even a broadband connection. Now, it's pretty close to what it's like sitting at the machine (over broadband), and using the page up/page down keys is almost instantaneous (there must be some caching improvements as well?). You should see scrolling in IE--I'm using the mouse wheel on Activewin.com, and the scrolling is smooth as silk. With what I'm seeing in IE, I really think most people would have a tough time telling that it's a remote session. In RTM, scrolling isn't terrible, but there is a noticeable delay as it fills in the inch or so that moves when using the mouse wheel.
I'm very impressed--if you use RDP much, this update alone will be worth upgrading to SP1 sooner rather than later.
(Incidentally... the upgrade went without a hitch. Took about 45-50 minutes on an OptiPlex 745/2.4 GHz Core2 Duo/2 GB RAM/Intel integrated graphics. It took closer to an hour on a Lenovo X61 Tablet, and that seems to be just fine as well so far. I'm anxious to try one of the Lenovo T61s... hopefully tomorrow.)

Hmmm, I'm not seeing SP1 on MSDN. Oh well, I'll check again tonight.

I have this installed on my work laptop and my main office system. I was running the RC on the main system and had zero problems with it. I do a lot of VPN/RDP connections because of work and have noticed the improvement with it that bluvg is describing. File copying is faster over all. Also I have noticed that the hard drive doesn't seem to thrash as much randomly and generally the system seems more responsive but on my system I always felt it was faster then XP (both systems are dual core with 3GB of ram or more). Stability is rock solid - never seen a blue screen on either system or major crash but that was true before SP1.
Finally all my little complaints have mostly been fixed. My file explorer window would sometime freeze on opening for 30-45 seconds and it doesn't do it any more with SP1. Right clicking on a quick launch icon would sometimes result in a freeze for 20-30 seconds until the menu came up and that has been fixed.
Overall, if you are running Vista you should be loading this update. With SP1 i am completely comfortable recommending Vista to someone if they think about getting a new computer.

3:30 pm in California, and I don't see it on MSDN at all.

#4--it's not in the "All Downloads" section, as far as I could tell. You can find it at the top of the "most recent downloads" list (or whatever that is called when you first login to MSDN).

It is under "Top Downloads" on the main page after one logs in.
It uses Akamai's COM Client control based download manager - requiring a separate, but brief installation and page re-load.
It is not yet listed within the normal subscriber downloads section.

I grabbed SP1 from MSDN and installed on my Enterprise laptop, and two Ultimate desktops...Everything is great except the following: My Verizon broadband card (5740, I think) won't work without some playing around on my laptop (the driver works, but the software doesn't recognize the card), and my desktop (gaming) box blue screened once last night. My HTPC is running great, though :)

Odd, I am staring right at and there is no reference to the Vista SP1 download anywhere. We have the full Visual Studio Team Suite which should show us nearly everything. I just don't see it anywhere.

I downloaded this yesterday, but I'm kind of hesitant to install it. I've heard there were issues that caused it to toast machines with certain drivers... and with my luck, that will be me.
I'm running a Gen 4 Dell XPS, and without any way to determine what drivers are affected, I'm too scared. :)

RMD: Image your hard drive before installing any SP. Acronis True Image fully functional trial is available for a couple of weeks. Drive Image XML is free not as easy to use. Download, image, and install SP1. If it pukes, just restore the image and try again.

I use WHS for backups, and I'm glad I do.
SP1 install went fine. No issues for 2 days. Then I decided to do a DiskKeeper 2007 boot time defrag and....
that was the last of that install. Not sure what happened but the disk was corrupted. All gone bye bye.
Used the restore CD to boot and restore from the last backup to WHS the night before. Took 1 hour exactly and I was back up and running exactly as it was before the DK 2007 run.
