MS07-069 Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer - Post Install Issue | |

Kieron Shorrock: We have been investigating public reports of possible problems on systems that have installed the Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (942615), released earlier this month. We have some information to share with you regarding the results of our investigation into these reports. First, I want to note the security update does protect against the vulnerabilities noted in the bulletin. If you are not experiencing issues noted in the below referenced Knowledge Base article, no action is needed. We have been working with a small number of customers that reported issues related to the installation of MS07-069. Specifically, on a Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)-based computer, Internet Explorer 6 may stop responding when you try to a visit a web site. We’ve made an update to the Knowledge Base article for MS07-069, KB942615, which highlights the known issue. We have also added the following known issue Knowledge Base article KB946627. Because this occurs in a customized installation, this isn’t a widespread issue. | ||

| #1: I believe the purpose of that statement was to indicate that the problem was not that the security patch wasn't doing what it was designed to do. The problem is separate from that. If I had someone like you working for me who'd fire someone because he or she couldn't parse a simple statement and understand the purpose of it, I'd have to fire him or her for it. |

I'd fire all of you and start over.
I think our reliance on spelling and grammar checkers has disabled our ability to proof read and check our work. I'm quite sure that I understood her point. My mother was an English teacher, so it hurts when someone doesn't use it properly. |

This KB article (linked in article) brings up another pet peeve of mine. You have to call an 800 number (probably to Bangalore) to beg permission for them to send you the patch. Why not simply put the patch on the server farm, publish the link, and let anyone who is affected by this issue simply download it? Otherwise, people will not call the 800 number, will not install the fix for the fix, and complain more about the poor IE experience they are having.
Speaking of which: I have been having a number of issues with Windows Explorer, Outlook 2003, etc., having random UI issues, such as buttons and menus suddenly deciding not to work. I can make all the problems go away simply by shutting down the IE 7 instance I have running in the background. When I relaunch IE 7, the problem reappears within several minutes, due to memory leaking like an open screen door on a submerged submarine. It takes a complete reboot to make the problem go away for longer. However, the problem will still return. Gotta love that deep integration decision Microsoft made in regard to IE. Brilliance at its finest. |

Could be something else on your system causing it. We have identified a bug in McAfee's On Access scan that spikes the memory footprint of IE in certain situations.

| I am not using McAfee anything. I didn't have this problem until very recently, like the last couple of weeks. I noticed it sometime between last patch Tuesday and today. I have not added any new software since then. Even things like Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 would get wonky and refuse to load properly, until IE was shut down, or the system was rebooted. Afterwards, it would work just fine. |
